Property Description

Full description

Description
The Balbeg Fishings comprise of mostly double bank salmon fishing on about 1 mile of the Water of Girvan with a 5 year average of 32 salmon/grilse.

The fishing is easily accessible, comprises lovely fly water and the pools are easily fished - by both right and left handed fishermen, both banks of the beat offering plenty of easy casting from either shoulder.

The underlying hard geology of the Water of Girvan is complex with limestone and sandstone dominant, Balbeg Fishing has a mixture of long pastoral pools with riffles and more turbulent rocky sections which create a relatively fast flow with glides creating excellent fly water, the beat has 14 named pools.

The flow of the Water of Girvan is controlled by the Loch Braden dam upstream which produces freshets and therefore fishable water conditions at times when the river would otherwise be unfishable.

Since the beat was purchased by the current owners in 1997 it has been the subject of a continuous programme of upgrading and improvement including the construction of weirs, croys, bank reinforcements against erosion, the careful removal of trees and stumps and the cropping and thinning of bankside vegetation allowing for ease of casting. These works together with the quality of the fishing effort has over the years shown a marked improvement in the catch records.

At the bottom of the end of the beat, overlooking the Hut Pool is a timber single-room fishing hut with an outer fence protecting it from livestock, the hut provides a meeting place, shelter from the elements and a pretty focal point for riverbank picnics, fishing lunches and barbeques.

Access to the hut and most of the beat is on foot, there is a parking area for a couple of vehicles beside the gate at the road close to the fishing hut. It is possible to drive to the Craigfad Bridge and walk the top section of the beat from there. Brown trout fishing rights are included for sale.
