Tourism is a thriving industry in Ayrshire and is arguably Scotland's golfing Mecca with the home of the Open Championship at Prestwick and present day Open Championship links at Turnberry and Royal Troon. Ayr has its own racecourse. Alloway is the birthplace of Robert Burns and his legacy continues to draw people to the area.

The rivers of Ayrshire offer salmon fishing by permit, the rivers Irvine and Garnock are the closest to Kennox House. The area also offers some commercially run and challenging driven pheasant shooting and with permission some of the local estates and land owners allow the chance to stalk roe deer.

Sea fishing sport is available on the Ayrshire coastline.

For yachting enthusiasts, there are marina, yachting and chandlery services at Troon, Ardrossan, Largs and Inverkip. The lower reaches of the firth of Clyde offers some of the most scenic coastal sailing in western Europe.

Historical Note
The precise history of Kennox house is not fully known, but in his 'History of the County of Ayr 1852' James Paterson noted that the original mansion was built circa 1720 and in 1852, a modern building existed, which had been extensively extended and was owned by a Colonel McAlister. Colonel McAlister was one of the Somerville family who had owned the estate, formerly known as 'Crivoch', from around the beginning of the 18th Century. In 'Ayrshire and Arran' an illustrated Architectural guide, Rob Close dates the Regency part of the house to c.1820, and describes Kennox as a 'house of real quality'.

Kennox appears to have been further extended to the east in 1831 and this date appears on a stone on the east side of the house. A bathroom extension was built to the east side of the property in 1911 by the prominent architect of the day, James Archibald Morris of Ayr.

Kennox House, together with the entrance gate pillars, is protected by a category 'A' listing by Historic Scotland.

Travel Directions
From Glasgow city centre proceed in a southerly direction on the M77. Come off at at junction 7 Fenwick. Turn right onto the B778 following signs for Stewarton. Once in Stewarton turn left at the traffic lights onto Lainshaw St, proceed to the mini roundabout and turn right into Standalane, then bear left onto Kilwinning Road. Continue on Kilwinning Road for about 1.5 miles to find the entrance to Kennox House on the right hand side."
