Full description

Fort Henry House lies within Exton Park, the seat of the Earls of Gainsborough since the 16th century.

Fort Henry House takes its name from the listed folley of Fort Henry which sits on the other side of the lake and was built towards the end of the 18th century by William Legg.

Fort Henry House adjoins a boathouse onto the lake and this is cleverly mirrored in Fort Henry House itself with an outside terrace and crenellated balcony area directly overlooking the lake.

It is reputed that at the time of the 4th Earl who was a great patron of the arts especially music, Handel is known to have visited Exton Park and although no definite records exist, it is reputed that he put on performances within the grounds and gardens of Exton and at Fort Henry.

It is also recorded that the lake was used by the Noels for the reinactment of naval battles at that time and was a place where the family would entertain guests and used to celebrate family birthdays and marriages. Exton Park itself has existed since the 12th century.

A good sized country house converted from three original Gothic properties dating from the 18th century with a crenellated south wall with boathouse folley mirroring that of Fort Henry itself which is set on the other side of the lake.

The house enjoys a glorious lakeside setting with carefully managed, mature trees surrounding the generous lawned gardens in part and an adjacent separate fenced paddock area. in all some 4 acres or thereabouts.

The principal house offers lovely family accommodation with a fine entrance hall, flagstone floor and wood burning stove. This leads through to the principal drawing room which is of generous dimensions with an open hearth and French doors out onto the terrace and directly onto the adjoining lake.

There is a further good l-shaped sitting room with log burning stove, breakfast kitchen with an Aga range cooker, pantry and a separate dining room linking through to the hall and kitchen.

There is a spacious ground floor rear hall with separate cloaks and wc and utility.

To the first floor which is approached by a stone dog leg staircase there are six good bedrooms, two full bathrooms and separate w.c.

There is useful eaves storage and wonderful views from the upper floor across to the gardens and lake.

The property is approached along a private tree lined driveway leading down to a front courtyard area with generous lawned gardens, sloping gently down to the lake frontage. there are further lawned areas to the rear where the driveway continues round to detached coach house/garage with ground floor double garage and an external staircase to a useful double studio/office area over.

In addition to the lawned gardens there are areas of woodland and a separate enclosed open paddock.

The whole site in all some 4 acres or thereabouts.
