A beautiful Scottish country house on Loch Fyne

Location

Castleton House occupies a stunning position near the north shore of Loch Fyne and is reached by a private road leading off the A83.

Some of Britain's most spectacular scenery is found in this area of Scotland. There is superb hill walking and climbing, with the 'Rest and be Thankful' pass leading up through the Arrochar Alps which include four Munros (mountains over 3000 feet). It is also a renowned area for field sports, particularly stalking and shooting.

Lochgilphead sits in a sheltered glen at the head of Loch Gilp, an arm of Loch Fyne. Originally a fishing and market village, Lochgilphead is now a prosperous town with Kilmory Castle providing the headquarters for Argyll and Bute Council. The town provides a variety of amenities and shops, including a sports centre, swimming pool and 9 hole golf course. There is a library, primary and secondary school campus and ultra modern Lochgilphead Medical Centre. The neighbouring village of Ardrishaig is renowned for sailing and water sports. The Crinan Canal provides a link from the Firth of Clyde to Crinan and from the Sound of Jura to the Western Isles.

Description

Castleton House is a stunning country house surrounded by wonderful gardens in a secluded private location on the Argyll coastline. The house is thought to date from the early 18th century when it was built under a slate roof. Around the millennium it was significantly extended and upgraded to include an architectural award winning new wing which was built by local craftsmen to a very high specification.

The house is entered through a large curved oak door into a circular turret hall which has a sweeping balustrade staircase to the galleried landing. The hall has a feature fireplace, panelling and parquet floor. From the entrance hall, doors open to an impressive billiards room with panelling. Leading from the hall is a magnificent drawing room with detailed trompe l'oeil and gilded cornicing and substantial open fire and fireplace. The inner hall has a further staircase to the first floor landing and doors to the dining room and morning room which has a bay window and French doors. The large fitted kitchen lies to the rear of the house. From the inner hall is access to the swimming pool room, games room, sauna and WC.

The staircase in the entrance hall rises to the galleried landing which has double doors opening to the library with fireplace. The master bedroom suite has a bedroom, dressing room and bathroom and access to a terrace with views across the loch. There are a further six bedrooms, two en suite and a further bathroom and shower room.

On the second floor there are a further two bedrooms and a shower room. In all there are nine bedrooms.

The Carriage House
To the rear of Castleton House is a charming detached cottage called the Carriage House which is ideal for staff accommodation or holiday rentals. Built in stone under a slate roof it offers accommodation on one level comprising: sitting room with French doors onto a terrace, kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom.

Gardens and grounds
The gardens and grounds of Castleton comprise some 10 acres and are magnificent. They have had significant investment in recent years which has seen extra pruning and clearing to improve the view and the light to the more formal grounds. To the front of house there are extensive lawns with mature trees and herbaceous borders, to the north of the house is a walled garden and a tennis court.

The gardens are a notable feature of the property and the present owners have re-established access to the lower levels of the gardens and reduced the preponderance of ponticum. Paths wynd through the gardens from the house in several directions including down to the lochside. There are many specimen rhododendrons, azaleas, eucryphia, ancient fig (Griselinia Litoralis), Chilean Holly (Desfontainia spinose), New Zealand Daisy Tree (Olearia macrodonta), Strawberry Tree, a varierty of firs, pines and mature native trees. The garden flowers in sections from January through to September.

Square Footage: 9,192 sq ft
