Built in about 1726, probably for their local agent, by the Worsley family, who then had estates in the area, it was sold in about 1840 to the Fevershams of Duncombe Park, who held it for 140 years. There is, however, a record of a tithe paid to Rievaulx Abbey in 1303, so there must have been a dwelling on the site for at least 700 years.Indeed the Abbey dominates the landscape on the banks of the River Rye and views of it fill the easterly aspect from the house. Built of dressed and random stone, Scawton Croft stands on three floors and has a long drive and pretty gardens as well as a detached office/cartshed and pasture land.• In the valley of the Rye and with views to Rievaulx Abbey
