'Barnett Road was my first house purchase and I was attracted to the area as my parents lived not far away, in Dover Road, when I was born. I have memories of the various shops at Fiveways, particularly of getting a jam donut from the Bakery. The parade of shops in the dip are both very handy and make it feel a bit like a village community. What attracted me to the house was the fact that Barnett Road does not lead anywhere other than Hollingbury Rise, and so has very few cars going up and down it. I also fell in love with the garden, and the large distance between Hertford and Barnett Road houses, filled by greenery and birdsong. We hear many pleasant birdsongs in the summer evenings. I also liked that my garden had three distinct sections; the patio, the lawn and bottom section for growing fruit & veg (but unfortunately I have had to give that up).

Although my plans have now changed as I intend to take advantage of the very low house prices in France, this house still has great potential for expansion. I was planning on extending the ground floor at the back of the house and creating a large, open kitchen/dining area. It could perhaps have led on to a decked terrace overlooking all the green of the garden. I would also have put a room in the roof from which I could see even further over Brighton. Having grown up with a log fire, I also would have put one of these in to the living room. This was my vision for the house but now it needs someone else, with a family, to make the most of it.'
