Description

Slade House is a most attractive late 19th century country house. Built of stone with a slate roof, it was originally the quarry master's house. The quarry ceased after World War II, but was renowned for producing the Carmyllie stone slates which were typical of the area. The house was acquired by the sellers in 1979, who were drawn to its convenient location and privacy. The annexe, which separates the gardens from the nearby farm steading, was acquired in 1999 and was initially used as additional guest accommodation and as a family games room, with the swimming pool being adjacent. It was rewired and re-plumbed in 2002 and it has since been used as offices and more latterly as display premises for a family run retail business. As such it has potential for a variety of different uses, subject to obtaining any necessary consents.

Slade House was extended in 1999 with the erection of another en suite bedroom upstairs. The back hall and utility room were added in 2008. It is now a delightful country house which benefits from well proportioned rooms, and retains much of its period character and features. A focal point is the open plan breakfasting kitchen and family room, which links to the garden. At the front of the house is an elegant drawing room and the dining room links directly to the kitchen. Also at the front of the house is a downstairs bedroom, but this could be used as another reception room if desired. Upstairs are four further bedrooms, two of which are en suite. As such it is ideal for both modern family living and for entertaining.

Most visitors arrive at the back of the house where there is a parking and turning area, with an entrance door leading to the rear hall. However there is also a separate drive which leads through the wooded grounds and gardens to the front of the house, where a wooden front door opens to a porch with cornice, period tiled floor, two etched windows and an inner partially glazed door with sidelights to the hallway. This has a cornice, wooden flooring and staircase to the first floor. Off the hallway the elegant drawing room, which was originally two rooms, has an ornate cornice, open fireplace with marble mantel, three wall lights, two picture lights and bookshelves. Opposite is bedroom 1 which was formerly a reception room and has an ornate cornice and centre rose. The back hall has a wooden floor, downlighters, and an understair cupboard. Off the back hall is the dining room which has a cornice, stone flag floor and connects through to the kitchen. This has fitted wall and base units with wooden worktops, twin stainless steel sink, plumbing for dishwasher, Leisure Rangemaster cooker with griddle, hot plate, four hobs and a double oven/grill. The breakfasting and family area has a large picture window and sliding patio doors to the garden and has an alcove with shelves and cupboard below, free standing wood burning stove, fitted shelves and a tiled floor. Off the back hall is the utility room with wooden wall and base units with wooden worktops, Belfast sink, plumbing for washing machine and drier, built in hanging cupboard and clothes pulley. The tiled shower room has a shower cubicle, washbasin and WC. The rear entrance lobby has a back door, coat hooks and a door to the integral garage which has two up and over doors, one of which is automatic, a concrete floor, Trianco oil fired boiler and hot water tank.

A wooden staircase leads up to the first floor. The master bedroom at the front of the house has a cornice, two wall lights, walk in dressing room with hanging rails and shelves and an en suite bathroom with bath with shower, pedestal washbasin and WC. The adjoining study/dressing room has fitted shelves. Bedrooms 3 and 4 have cornices while bedroom 4 also has a window seat. The bathroom has a bath, pedestal washbasin, WC and a shelved linen cupboard. Beyond this is a further walk in linen cupboard, while bedroom 5 has a Juliet balcony and a dressing room with fitted hanging rails, shelves and dressing table. The tiled en suite bathroom has a bath with shower, WC and pedestal washbasin.

The separate annexe is situated at the bottom of the garden. This is stone built with a slate roof, and a harled extension. A glazed entrance door with glazed side lights opens to a hallway with stairs to the first floor and access to two store rooms, one with an outside door. Off an inner hallway is the display room with spotlights and shelved cupboard and a cupboard housing a Warmflo oil fired boiler. This was previously used as a games room. The kitchen has fitted base units with an Indesit oven and NEFF hob and extractor, sink and back door. Adjacent is a tiled shower room with shower cubicle, washbasin and WC. At first floor level is a bedroom/studio with shelves and further bedroom/office with fitted cupboards and which leads through to a large office. At the back of the cottage is a changing room with sauna and there is a plant room with a boiler for the pool. Beyond the cottage is the outdoor swimming pool.

The gardens and grounds at Slade House are lovely. Off the family room/kitchen is a sheltered paved patio, which is an ideal seating and entertaining area. In front of the house, and leading down to the pool is an extensive lawn. There are flower and shrub borders, together with an arbour with a sun dial. The gardens are surrounded by wooded grounds, with mature trees providing privacy and shelter and which are a haven for wildlife. A former riding arena now has a Cruck Marquee with a wooden frame. Again this creates another fine seating and entertaining area. Beyond this is a stone built summer house with a Carmyllie stone slate roof. This is timber lined with a stone flag floor and has a wood burning stove. At the back of the house is a wooden stable with a tack room which is now used for garden storage, together with a covered log store and dog kennel.
