HISTORY OF THE VULCAN AND GUNWHARF QUAYS
The history of Gunwharf Quays can be traced back to the 12th century when Richard 1st in 1194 let out land for the development of a dock yard and constructed a dock for royal galleys.
Gun wharf was the first main ordinance yard for the navy, established in the late 17th century.
Ships would collect gun powder, cannon balls and weapons before leaving the harbour to go to battle; it would have been from here that Nelson's Victory collected her munitions before the Battle of Trafalgar.
The foundation stone for the Vulcan building was laid in 1811 by the Duke of Clarence and completed in 1874.
Nelson's Gate was built in 1803 and formed the main entrance into Gun Wharf.
The old Infirmary Building is believed to build to be the oldest standing on the site; it was a hospital for the Royal Marines returning from H.M Ships.
The Customs and Excise House was built in 1811.
H.M.S. Vernon in 1891, the Royall Marines vacated the site and the whole site was used by the Naval Ordinance Department until 1919. After this it was taken over by the Naval Torpedo School.
A lot of damage was done to quite a few of the buildings during World War 2.
Many famous people served here including: Buster Crabbe who was said to be working for M.I.5 in 1956 and Prince Charles in 1970.
HMS Vernon closed in 1986 and in 1992 the whole site was declared a conservation area by Portsmouth City Council.
In 1996 the Portsmouth City Council approved a plan to develop the site into a Retail outlets and residential area incorporating the historical Vulcan, Infirmary and Nelson's Gate.
Now it is a thriving shopping and eating place due to its location and fantastic views overlooking the harbour
