The Old Rectory is a fine 18th century former Rectory set on the edge of the village of Buckland, adjacent to St Andrews Church, which parish records suggest was built in 1348. The church is preserved by the Church Conservation Trust and is now used for special occasions, including the annual Candlelit Christmas Carol Service. It is probable that there has been a house on the site since that time, however, the Listing suggests a house dating predominantly from the 18th century. The oldest part of the house is traditionally constructed with a timber frame and was probably originally rendered, but is now faced in brick with later 19th century additions. The Old Rectory was sold by the church in the 1950s and the Rev Giles Hunt was the last incumbent.
The current owners have spent a considerable amount of time and energy restoring and redecorating the house, whilst retaining the original features. The accommodation includes a sizeable and attractive entrance hall which leads to the main reception rooms which have high ceilings, wooden floors and magnificent deep sash windows, with working window shutters and some wood panelling. There is a traditional farmhouse kitchen/breakfast room with a four oven Aga, boot and utility rooms, as well as modern comforts such as zonal heating and under floor heating in the first floor bathrooms. On the first and second floors all the bedrooms are generously proportioned and the master bedroom has a dressing room and en suite bathroom. The layout of the house allows for up to seven bedrooms on the first and second floor and a separate two storey annexe/cottage.
Outside, there are two driveways leading to the property, one from the north and the other from the west, the latter passes a paddock, stables, sweeping lawns and magnificent mature trees to the front. The more formal garden lies behind and includes a terrace, shrubs and herbaceous borders with lighting and back onto the church grounds
Directions From Bishops Stortford proceed west on the A120 and join the A10 at Puckeridge, heating north towards Buntingford. Just as you leave the village, turn right next to a period farmhouse heading eat towards Barkway.
