Glebe House has one of the prettiest locations in the Scottish Borders, lying on the edge of the hamlet of Hownam in the foothills of the Cheviots. Glebe House has lovely southerly outlooks over the Kale Water and backs on to Hownam Church and graveyard.
Hownam is a picturesque small hamlet with a row of houses between Hownam Church at its north end and the village hall at the south end. The settlement is old, having first been recorded in 1165, and the name possibly comes from the Hunas - an early tribe believed to have built the numerous hill forts in the area. Deer Street, the old Roman road, passes to the west of the village and the remains of many ancient iron age settlements can be identified in the surrounding hills.
Nearby Morebattle has a primary school, church, village shop and pub. In addition, each of Jedburgh and Kelso are within easy reach and provide a good range of schooling, health centres, shops, supermarkets, sporting and recreational facilities.
The Scottish Borders is a particularly attractive area of the country and is ideal for those looking for a scenic, rural home, whilst being within easy reach of Edinburgh, Scotland's central belt and the northeast of England - with the ability to work from home using Wifi. The Borders travel links with Edinburgh have recently been enhanced by the re-opening of the Waverley railway line.
From Morebattle head south towards Hownam along the unclassified road that runs beside the Kale Water. On entering the hamlet take the first right turn in to a short private road which leads to Glebe House. Glebe House backs on to the Church and graveyard.
The bridge over the Kale Water at Hownam Howgate is to be closed for repairs for 12 weeks from 27th June 2016. During this period the best way to reach Hownam from Morebattle is from the B6401 between Morebattle and Kalemouth, turning south on to the Cessford road and continuing south past Cessford, turning left to Rennieston before turning left again to Hownam. This approach involves climbing up to Whitton Edge before descending again to Hownam and provides magnificent easterly outlooks towards the Cheviots. Having dropped down from Whitton Edge to Hownam turn right just after crossing the Kale Water and the short road to Glebe House is the first turning on your right. (see location plan)
Glebe House is a superb former manse which appears to date from the late 1700s. The property has been modernised and improved since the 1970s and has in recent years been used as a successful holiday let.

These outbuildings appear to have potential for conversion to an alternative use, if desired, subject to consents.
