Wonderful restoration project

Location

Manor Farm stands prominently on the corner of Worlds End Lane with access off Manor Farm Close in the heart of Weston Turville. In the Domesday book of 1086 the village is recorded as Westone. The suffix Turville was added later referring to the Lords of the manor in the thirteenth century. Between 1236 to 1539 it had grown to house five areas or 'ends' - Church End, Brook End, South End, West End and Worlds End. The St Mary the Virgin parish church dates from the 13th century.

Today Weston Turville is a popular residential area within Aylesbury Vale located off the A413 which links Wendover to Aylesbury. Aylesbury centre with its comprehensive range of shopping facilities and amenities is about four miles away. The nearest railway station is Stoke Mandeville offering a Chiltern Line commuter service into London Marylebone in less than 60 minutes.

Description

Manor Farm formerly 'The Hyde Manor', once owned by Sir Henry Colet, is an impressive Grade II* listed property, the original parts dating from the late 15th century and the main part of the home Georgian.

Owned by the same family for a number of generations, it is now in need of sympathetic restoration and modernisation offering a wonderful opportunity to a discerning buyer looking for such a project to create a special and substantial family home.

Divided into three distinct sections, the central part was originally an 'open hall house', open from the ground to the apex of the roof, a common feature of medieval houses. It seems that the open hall at Manor Farm had at least three bays with a lantern like structure known as a louver acting as a smoke tunnel. The impressive original post and truss frame is still in evidence as they continue through the ceilings with the roof formed by substantial timbers in the shape of a St Andrews cross or 'scissor truss crossing' (see photograph supplied by owner).
Whilst the exact age of this part of the house is difficult to determine the listing details give a date of 1400s though it may well date back to the 1300s. Two windows in the older part of the house were probably bricked in during the time of the window tax of 1696. The remains of a washing copper, brewing copper and a bread oven were believed to have been installed in the 1800s. Steep stone steps lead down to the cavernous cellar divided into three 'barrel' rooms with wooden doors and a large area once the site of a dairy sometime in the 1800s. Manor Farm was known as Dairy Farm at this time. The shallow lead lined vat would probably have been used for the making of butter and cheese. Above the cellars is the large Georgian house with its grander entrance hall and elegant staircase to the upper floor.

There are original shutters inside the door that leads to the rear garden with others found in rooms where there are sash windows. The main house provides three generous double bedrooms, a dressing room and a bathroom. There are a further three potential intercommunicating bedrooms in need of major refurbishment currently accessed via a steep staircase from the kitchen.

On the east side of the original hall is a building believed to be Victorian built as a stable/coach house and granary with hay and pigeon lofts above. Currently used as a garage and a wood store there is again scope for potential conversion.
Outside, surrounding the house are areas of enclosed part walled formal gardens with extensive areas of lawn and fruit trees together with a productive organic vegetable garden to the side.
