It’s a large village with a vibrant community and so much going on. There's an outstanding primary school, cricket club, bowling club, yoga classes, tennis courts, playground, recreation ground, as well as lovely river and countryside walks. The village also has lots of useful shops including a butchers, Co-op, cafe´, post office, newsagent, two hairdressers, an Indian restaurant and three pubs. It is also just under 6 miles from the centre of Bath; so for us it has been ideal.”
“The minute we walked through the front door of Northfield House we knew we'd found something special. The large entrance hall has a wonderful Victorian tiled floor and the stairs sweep round past a half landing window allowing light to flood in. All of the rooms are spacious and many have wonderfully high ceilings which we love. There are some gorgeous features throughout.”
“It was definitely in need of renovation when we moved here, but in everything we have done we have tried remain true to the architectural origins of the house while keeping the look clean and unfussy. We have some beautiful original fireplaces and we installed a log burner in our family sitting room when we uncovered an old stone fireplace blocked up and hidden behind a radiator. Lots of the rooms have their original cornicing and there are some lovely, decorative mouldings in the hall and a beautiful ceiling rose in the sitting room. The sitting room is a particularly beautiful part of the house,” says Mary. “It’s a huge space with a big bay window and a large open fire. It’s where we have our piano and it’s a lovely room to entertain in, particularly at Christmas. It’s just a very comfortable and beautiful home to live in.””
“The kitchen has French doors which lead out onto the patio terrace, so there’s a nice connection between inside and out,” continues Mary, “and just around the corner we have a sunken garden, which is a lovely walled area where we can sit out and eat. The rest of the space is mainly lawn and enveloped by a beautiful old stone wall, so there’s a good degree of privacy, and it is south facing, so bathed in sunshine during the summer. We also have a double garage and a gravel driveway on which we can fit up to four cars,” says Mary, “which, as parking is at a premium in the village, has been a real bonus.”*
“There’s so much going on in Box and it’s a great place to bring up a family,” says Mary. “There are many young families in the village, and it is also a vibrant musical centre, maybe because Peter Gabriel’s recording studio is just down the road! We also benefit from having Bath just a stone’s throw away and we’re surrounded by some quite spectacular countryside; it’s a location which I think would be hard to better.”
“This has been a really wonderful family home and there’s so much that we’ll miss when we leave,” says Mary, “but our daughters are moving on, and it really needs another family to fill it and enjoy it.” *
