Full description

A unique and distinctive modern residence set on over three quarters of an acre in the centre of the village. The house offers 4,000 square feet of well-planned accommodation with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a 19ft kitchen/breakfast room, three further reception rooms and a well-proportioned conservatory. Outside there is a detached oak framed double garage, additional parking facilities and mature gardens. The property is ideally located for a busy commuter looking for peace and quiet within 10 miles of both Huntingdon and Peterborough.

A modern house which blends seamlessly into the centre of an established village with many period properties is a rare discovery. But it was the result the current owners were striving for when they built Penfold House in Winwick. Our business is building luxury traditional homes, say the couple who run and own the building company C & S Fox Limited. We pride ourselves on the high standard of our homes. And this property incorporates many of the best elements of our other projects. Weve been in the industry for more than 20 years and we are winners of a Conservation Award but this is only the second of our homes weve had the chance to live in.
This house is built with solid brick and block walls and has reclaimed roof tiles and oak beams, continues the owner. The garage is constructed from solid oak and the main house is rendered and painted. Our central focus in designing Penfold House was to achieve a large family home which would adapt as children grew older. Its certainly lived up to our original expectations and more, she says. On the ground floor there are double doors from the dining room to the conservatory which in turn is linked by double doors into the kitchen. Its a house which is brilliant for a family but is just as comfortable if youre entertaining a large number of guests. At times weve had 22 sitting down to dinner around the table in the dining room.
Everything about Penfold House has been carefully considered, from the size of the windows, the large entrance hall with its impressive oak staircase and galleried landing, to the design of the kitchen. We both love cooking, explains the owner. Large granite work surfaces and plenty of storage were very important to us. We never expected to find a kitchen to buy off the shelf, so it has all been hand made by our carpenter. Throughout the house we have wooden floors and under floor heating a system which generates a lovely even heat without any hotspots or the need for radiators and is very economical to run
Outside, the garden which has an expansive lawn and many mature trees has provided an excellent playground for the children as theyve been growing up. A section of the garden is technically a paddock which means you could fence it off for a pony and we currently have chickens there, explains the owner. The total plot of 0.8 acres was a chance find and is in a beautiful position overlooking the church and village green. Our intention in all of our work has always been to build one large property with plenty of grounds rather than cram three of four homes onto a site. And its exactly what we were able to do here, she adds. Its a gamble which has paid off with this impressive house looking perfectly placed within its surroundings.
The pace of life in Winwick has also been an important part of the familys lifestyle. It has been very enjoyable living in such a thriving rural community, recalls the owner. The village hall is used a lot and the active social committee organises some memorable events. There is a big Harvest Festival each year and regular walks with a nice bunch of people making it a lot of fun. Well all end up at a house in the village at the end and it hasnt been unknown to see dozens of pairs of Wellington boots kicked off outside our home while we entertain inside. And having the space to do that has been marvellous.
Were almost ten miles from both Huntingdon and Peterborough which are both well served for shops and train stations. Our nearest pub, village shop and primary school are about 2 miles away in Gidding and there is a school bus which leaves from the village green for pupils attending Sawtry Community College. Kimbolton School is approximately 7 miles away.
This has been a superb family home in an excellent village. Weve really enjoyed life here but another project beckons.
