Alltan is one of a group of four former HM Coastguard properties at Kilchoman on the west coast of the Rhinns of Islay.  The property enjoys spectacular westerly views over the dunes of Machair Bay to the Atlantic Ocean.  It is a detached house originally built as the Coastguard Station Officer’s home in the early 1950’s and it sits adjacent to the terrace which comprises the three other former Coastguard houses.  The house, freshly whitewashed, faces west, and lies between the terrace coastguard houses to the north and a more modern detached property immediately to the south.  After coastguard use ceased, the four Coastguard Cottages were acquired by Argyll County Council.  The present owner thereafter bought the house, as sitting tenant, from the Local Authority in 1992.
