The Story

HERITAGE STYLE
The years they have been at the property have seen them embellish it with a few additions of their own. Among these was the creation of the garden room, which has become a favourite place to relax. “It is so full of light; it is nice to be able to relax in there and look out across the garden,” she says. The couple also created an office, where they can both work from home. This also has the flexibility of becoming an extra bedroom if required. “We have decorated the whole house in sympathy with its period style, trying to retain and respect the character of the building: we added a reproduction fireplace and multi fuel burning stove to the main reception rooms and the kitchen has a cottage style.” Most of the house is decorated in neutral colours with accents of heritage shades from Laura Ashley.

PARTY HOUSE
Silfield House has a comfortable layout, where it is easy to circulate. “You can make rooms very private by closing doors or you can open them up if you have lots of people in the house,” she says. “I love the drawing room because it is so relaxing, and the dining room, where we often have up to 17 people sitting round the table to eat together at Christmas.”
She adds: “We have hosted lots of gatherings of family and friends here – in fact this is often called ‘the party house’ or ‘the Christmas house’ because it is where everyone is invited for special occasions.”

EVENING SUNSHINE
The couple often hold parties out in the garden or host summer barbecues. “When we had the garden landscaped we created a special terrace, which catches the last of the evening sun and where it is lovely to sit as the day draws to a close,” she says. “We are members of lots of groups in Wymondham and, because we are very central, this is often a convenient place to gather together. The same was true for our daughters, the house was a hub for their friends – and they also held all sorts of parties here.” The position of the property made it easy for the children to travel into Norwich when they were teenagers and to walk to school and into town. “Our proximity to the railway station and local facilities, meant we never had to ferry them to their Saturday jobs or to meet their friends: they were able to be quite independent,” she says.

HISTORIC TOWN
Wymondham is an appealing market town, with lots of history. Its most famous inhabitant was Robert Kett who in 1549 led a rebellion of peasants. Today, one of the most notable of Wymondham’s landmarks is the twin-towered Abbey, founded as a Benedictine priory in 1107 by William d’Aubigny.
The town also boasts a historic market cross, arts centre, mid Norfolk railway and heritage museum. “We have lots of independent shops, excellent eating places and a 14th century inn, as well as two supermarkets, a Friday market and a monthly farmer’s market,” she says.

COUNTRYSIDE AND CITY LIFE
It is, however, also the surroundings of Wymondham that make it so popular. The town is just 15 minutes’ drive from the bustling centre of Norwich, with its major shopping areas, restaurants, cafés and leisure facilities. “We like walking in the area and my husband is a keen cyclist,” she says. “The Lizard conservation area is only minutes away, giving excellent dog walking routes.” She adds: “From here we have superb access on to the A11, which means we can easily travel across Norfolk and down to London – and we can head off to the Norfolk Broads, Thetford Forest or the beach whenever we choose. The railway gives easy access to Norwich, Cambridge and London. “We do love Wymondham and hope to be able to stay within the area when we move.”

Setting The Scene

Silfield House has beautiful wrap-around gardens that have been landscaped by the current owners. There are raised gardens to the side, with lawns and mature trees, and a multi-level entertaining terrace with a built-in barbecue. This is perfect for al fresco dining as it has a screening trellis. There are steps down to the rear garden, which leads out to the parking area and double garage. To the rear there are further lawns, together with cottage garden flowers and plants, and a useful tool shed and bike store. To the farthest side, the garden is bounded by brick wall with climbing roses, a newly planted laurel hedge to the front and a raised decking area close to the house. There is a greenhouse adjacent to the house with a mature vine.
