4 bedroom detached house for sale

The Gasworks, Upper Slaughter, Gloucestershire

£1,590,000

Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Freehold

This house, located overlooking open fields and woodland in the beautiful Cotswolds village of Upper Slaughter, was completed in 2015 to the designs of the celebrated Chris Dyson Architects. Largely clad in CorTen steel as a nod the area’s agricultural building heritage, the design marries an old stone gasworks dating back to the 19th century to a new light-filled extension.

Accommodation includes four bedrooms, all of which have en suite bathrooms. The master bedroom suite is particularly notable, featuring a large picture window with far reaching rural views and dressing room. The older part of the building is primarily occupied by a wonderful, high-ceilinged living room which leads to a kitchen / breakfast room on one side and a formal dining area (or library area) on the other. The new circular two-storey tower contains a second reception and a study. The accommodation is arranged around a central courtyard, with further areas of garden on the other side of the property. The gardens overlook open farmland and woodland, making this a beautiful rural setting. At the front of the property is a gravel drive accessed via wooden gates which provides ample parking space. A self contained timber studio / office building (with its own log burner and superb views) stands at the front of the property.

Dyson’s audacious design, that is at once entirely contemporary but also brings out rich history of the site, has been much admired in the architecture and design press. The RIBA Journal (Royal Institute of British Architects) wrote following a visit that “on a hot, hazy English afternoon [the property] is almost too much for the senses: the sound of cuckoos somewhere in the blue, the blue against the green of the rolling countryside: and against the green the orange [of the CorTen steel]”. Dezeen quotes Dyson describing “the steel envelope [that] sits on a sustainably sourced timber frame and pays homage to the building's industrial past, while creating a striking contrast to the main building”. Dyson is one of London’s most admired architects, winning widespread admiration particularly for his work that brings a Modern outlook to historic buildings.

Upper Slaughter is often described as a quintessential Cotswolds village thanks to the typical vernacular stone buildings, surrounding countryside and the pretty River Eye running nearby. The village is home to the renowned Lords of the Manor Hotel, which has a Michelin starred restaurant. Further facilities are available at Stow on the Wold, Bourton on the Water and Moreton in Marsh. The larger centres of Cheltenham, Cirencester, Oxford and Stratford upon Avon are also easily accessible by car.

The closest train station can be found at Kingham, which runs services to Oxford in 30 minutes and London Paddington in 90 minutes.
