The Old Reading Rooms form a most comfortable, spacious and convenient home with a wealth of character and style. Historical information taken from the owner and the local book "Wiveliscombe and its History" the property was believed to have been built in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. After a public meeting chaired by William Hancock, owner of the Hancock brewery a major employer in the town, it was decided to mark the Queen's Jubilee year by the building of a library. The new building was designed by Mr Newton who was born in Wiveliscombe but by that time was practising as an architect in Birmingham. The foundation stone was laid by William Hancock on the 24th June 1887 and the Reading Rooms were opened late in 1888. Originally the ground floor was divided into two reading rooms, one for public use and the other for subscribers. The first floor originally housed a billiard room and snug, now the second bedroom. Later the urban district council used the upper floors as a council chamber and between 1946 and 1972 the building housed the public library. The building was then sold for public use and housed various businesses until 2004.

The ground floor accommodates a large 30' kitchen, dining and living space with high ceilings, cornices, stained glass windows with strip surrounds, cast iron fire place and the original reading room benches around the walls. Further to this is a separate shower room and cloakroom. The first floor houses a magnificent double storey reception room as well as a bedroom and family bathroom, whilst a galleried double bedroom is reached by a large spiral staircase. This room has fabulous rural views across the town to the rolling countryside beyond in a southerly direction. Timber floors are exposed in most rooms complimenting the Victorian panelled doors, large skirting boards and architraves. Travertine marble is used extensively in the contemporary shower room and there is a gas fire in the main living room. The property benefits from gas central heating and a manageable court yard to the rear. The property also offers a high level of convenience being very close to the town centre and virtually a level walk. There is a garage in a block on the nearby old brewery site.
