5 bedroom detached house for sale

Yester Road, Chislehurst, London, BR7

£1,350,000

Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Freehold

This superb example of a late 1960s detached house was designed by the architect Roy Lancaster. It is a five-bedroom house with two reception rooms and can be found in a quiet and private location in Chislehurst, a sought-after town on the outskirts of London. Planning permission has been granted to convert the large attached garage into further accommodation. A copy of the existing plans is available upon request.

Accommodation is arranged over two floors, with the principal rooms facing south and overlooking the gardens. The front door leads to an entrance hall which shows off the original tropical hardwood staircase and has a walk-in coat cupboard. The hall leads into the main living / dining room at one end, and to a WC and utility room at the other. The living room is a spectacular space with almost full-length floor-to-ceiling glazing making it a wonderfully light area to live in. An electronically-operated awning offers shade on hot days, when the glazed doors can be pulled right back and open the house up to the garden. The living room features the original wood block flooring and a recently-fitted wood-burning stove.

The kitchen was handmade by a previous owner of the house and is still in good working order. This leads to the utility room and the second reception room which is a lovely, large square-shaped space.

The stairs lead from the ground floor up to a landing, where light floods into the first floor. The master bedroom is on the south-facing side of the house and has in-built wardrobes and the original en suite bathroom. There are four further bedrooms, two of which are used as studies by the current owners and open out onto a private, wisteria-covered balcony. There is also a large family bathroom, with a shower cubicle.

Extensive updating was carried out on the property five years ago, with work including re-wiring, an entirely new heating system and re-plastering. Some more decorative works, however, could be undertaken such as re-fitting of the en suite bathroom. Some of the best original details, such as the staircase and the internal door handles remain.

To the side of the house is an attached garage that the current owners have recently got permission to turn into further accommodation. Ample parking space is provided on the property’s substantial private driveway. To the rear of the house is a garden that the current owners have landscaped in ‘park’ style. A patio space adjoins the living room and a flower bed / rockery divides the patio from the lawn. An established weeping cherry (spectacular when it blossoms in mid-march) provides a shaded space to sit or swing a chair hammock from during summer. The current owners have also built some raised beds for vegetable growing. Two sheds provide ample storage for garden and play equipment and there is also a large children’s slide built into the garden’s natural landscape.

Designed in 1968 by Roy Lancaster as one of two neighbouring houses, the bricks used and block-like forms deliberately echo those of the Greatwood properties nearby. Greatwood, designed by the architect Norman Starrett in 1962, is an award-winning group of modern houses that is still much admired today. At the time of the house’s design, Lancaster was one of the brightest young architects to be working at the Chelsea-based Raglan Squire & Partners, one of London’s most respected practices.

Although the address of this property is Yester Road, it actually lies down a quiet, private drive off the main road, closer to Camden Park Road. Chislehurst High Street is an 8 – 10 minute walk through parkland, and the pond, common and national trust woodlands are all nearby. Elmstead Woods station is also a ten minute walk away and from here trains go to London Cannon Street and Charing Cross in under half an hour. Bickley station, which is 3 – 4 minutes drive, runs services to London Victoria in under half an hour, and to London St. Pancras (via Peckham Rye and Farringdon) in three quarters of an hour.

Chislehurst has an excellent choice of local schools, both public and private. The house is within easy walking distance from Bullers Wood High School for Girls; an Outstanding school which is planning to open a boys school on the same site next year.
