Why you’ll like it:
The stunning Regency terraces of Brunswick Terrace are integral to Brighton and Hove’s unique identity as a cosmopolitan city of style and taste. They were built in 1824 by architect Charles Busby as Brighton had become very fashionable for the top tiers of society, and they were suitably impressed by the curved ‘Brunswick Cream’ facades with their Ionic and Corinthian columns. Although many of the houses have now been converted into apartments, they still retain an air of grandeur, and Brunswick is still one of the most prestigious addresses in the city.
You approach the house up some stone steps, where the glossy black front door opens up to a neat communal hallway where your door is on the right. This in turn opens to the flat where you are immediately aware of the gracious living room of regal proportions, and filled with light from the south. The floors are not original, but they are solid oak in a chevron design and these complement the fresh white walls and the ornate cornicing on the ceiling. The windows are tall and dressed with their original shutters, and the glass is soundproof so you cannot hear the passing cars at all when shut. They frame the ever changing sea views and skyscapes, which never tire no matter what time of year. There is a handsome fireplace in black with a gas stove insert to warm you in the cooler months, but this is rarely necessary as it is a naturally warm flat with very efficient gas central heating system too.
Many flats of this size have been partitioned to create a greater number of rooms, but the fact this has not makes it feel rather special - there is still scope to modernise should you choose, but to add a mezzanine floor or kitchen to this space would detract from the character of the room.
Double doors link the living room with bedroom two, which would have been a dining space, and is currently set up as a tranquil home office. You can access this from the hallway too, so it is a very versatile space, and it is also conveniently close to the bathroom which has a roomy shower with a glass brick wall, and traditional style fixtures and fittings.
The hallway here is ample enough for storing bikes without compromising on safety and space, and there are two very deep storage cupboards for household essentials. The hallway narrows slightly to the rear of the flat, and opens out again to the kitchen which is a social size with a kitchen table, so your guests can sit and chat to you as you cook. The units are modern in warm wood, and these are topped with black granite which seamlessly rises up behind the cooker as a splashback. The sink has been cut into this, and the washer dryer, dishwasher, oven, hob and microwave are integrated, plus there’s space for an American fridge freezer, alongside a full height wine rack. The wide window provides natural light and this is bounced around the room by a large mirror on the opposing wall also adding to the feeling of space.
The master bedroom is a delight at the rear of the flat, and so very peaceful, It looks out to the sweet courtyard garden below, and is lovely and cool in the warmer months as it is not south facing. The wooden floors are stripped and varnished, and are in excellent condition, and the space is subtly lit by uplighters. There are two double wardrobes on the southerly wall with a central door that opens to a secret and very spacious en suite bathroom, tiled in mosaic and with a shower over the bath which is wider at one end for extra elbow room.
This flat has charm and character in abundance, and being well presented and in such a fantastic location, it is sure to be coveted by many.
Bear in mind:
The building has been self-managed by the residents for the last 15 years, and this has been extremely efficient. There is a sinking fund, and the building was repainted only last year, so this will not need to be done again until 2020.
“This is a very unique apartment, and so peaceful. The sense of space is wonderful; perfect for entertaining, and to be able to enjoy sea views all year round is a treat.”
