Full description

Tenure: Freehold

A rare opportunity to own a piece of Devizes heritage, this enchanting 17th century town house is listed Grade II* and retains immense charm and considerable character. Situated in the pretty conservation area in the heart of this historic old market town where there are other houses of similar date and structure, this property forms the left hand portion of the original house with two pilasters to the centre.

The house was built in 1640 and was part of St John's Court. General Wolfe is reputed to have stayed here when recruiting in the West Country before his success at Quebec. The second floor was added in 1740 when the Old Court was separated from the original weavers' and servants' quarters to the rear.

Sympathetically restored, the accommodation is arranged over three floors and briefly comprises: a charming fully panelled sitting room with open fire with Georgian cast iron grate, exposed beams and elm floor boards. There is a bespoke kitchen/dining room with quality appliances, a fitted pine dresser and doors to wine cellar and courtyard. An oak staircase with turned rails which date to 1680 leads to the first floor and a generous landing.

On the first floor is the master bedroom which is fully panelled with window shutters and two window seats; Georgian fireplace and elm floor boards. There is also a magnificent spacious bathroom with free standing claw foot bath. Perfect when lit by candle light.

On the second floor is the splendid second bedroom with a fascinating beamed ceiling of considerable architectural interest.

To the rear is a small private courtyard with a W.C. and pedestrian access to St John's Court.

Warmed by gas central heating and the more traditional feature of an open fire. Offered with no onward chain.

A very special and unique period home which is discreetly situated within a hop, skip and a jump of the Market Place. Simply stunning.

Devizes is a splendid historic market town that still hosts a weekly traditional outdoor market. There is an excellent range of shopping facilities and the town provides easy access to the larger cities of Georgian Bath and the cathedral City of Salisbury. There are mainline railway stations at nearby Pewsey and Chippenham (London, Paddington) approx. one hour twenty minutes, with junction 17 of the M4 motorway also close at hand.
