The Story

LIVING HISTORY
It was so much more than the setting, however, that enticed them to the property 17 years ago: Grade II Listed Trumpeter’s dates back to at least 1700 and has an abundance of character and history.
The Trumpeter was a man who became caught up in the agricultural riots at the begining of the 19th century and played his trumpet to rally people to make a stand against the rich landowners. He was sent to prison in Winchester but he was so well thought of that there was a major outcry. In the end he was released and lived a long and happy life here at the house. Selborne is famous famous for having been the home of the 18th. century naturalist Gilbert White, whose book, The Natural History of Selborne’ has sold over 30 million copies word wide.

SUMMER TIME
Featuring beams, studwork and fireplaces, Trumpeter’s has always had an inviting, country home ambience.
After moving in, the couple decide to extend its living space – and working closely with a local architect, planners and conservation experts, they came up with design for their summer drawing room and master bedroom suite.
“This is a lovely, spacious, triple aspect room, with two sets of French doors on to the garden, and is a wonderful place all year round but especially in the spring and summer. We can lie in bed looking out at Selborne Hanger and the fields, just watching the wildlife,” the owner recalls. “And at night we can look up at the stars.”
“I spent a long time sitting up by the stables, looking back at the house and thinking about how we might extend it again without detracting from the historic nature of the house”.

SPECTACULAR KITCHEN
Five years ago the couple decided to make further changes to their home: to create a larger kitchen, which also brought a new dimension to Trumpeter’s. “The result was a semi-circular kitchen, with a vaulted ceiling and a roof lantern."
Along with the kitchen and the summer drawing room, an impressive master bedroom was added, which has an attractive en suite bathroom. The bedroom has a triple aspect and another fabulous roof lantern.

ALL SEASONS
The four-bedroom house, which has a clay tiled roof as well as being partly thatched, has so many wonderful spaces to enjoy at different times.
“There is a lovely bright landing, which leads to the very dear, original bedrooms all of which have fitted wardrobes, and then we have his and hers studies, which is fantastic if you both want to work from home. My husband has one that overlooks the Yew Garden, while mine is rather like a library and faces the stables.”
In the winter the couple love to light the log fire in their winter sitting room, which is in the older part of the house: “This room is beautiful at that time of year and is wonderful at Christmas – in fact the whole house looks incredible when it is decorated and the fire is lit.”

A FINE ROMANCE
In the summer, as much time as possible is spent out in the garden. This has a large area of lawn, beautiful mature trees and the pretty, enclosed Yew Garden.
“It is very romantic yet easy to look after”. “We have opened it as part of the village’s Open Garden Scheme in aid of the Red Cross and held teas here for various other charitable events”
There is plenty of room for a marquee for hosting events and celebrations and yet there are also lots of delightful corners for sitting out and relaxing quietly.
“This has been a wonderful place to live”. “It is so beautiful and is in such a wonderful location – in fact the children call it a fairytale house.”

Setting The Scene

The driveway approaching Trumpeter’s winds gently past a double garage and generous parking toward a farmhouse-style entrance gate, behind which stands this fine example of a period home.
The house is nestled in its grounds, in a very private and peaceful elevated position, and looks out on to National Trust land and adjoining paddocks.
The exterior façade is elegant and undeniably charming in aspect and style. The property sits beautifully in its varied gardens, which burst into a colourful natural tapestry in the spring and summer months, followed by spectacular autumn colours on The Hangar. There is ample parking and a double garage, together with a summer house, greenhouse and stables. One of the stables is currently used as a playroom.”

Whats Nearby

Selbourn is an historic village set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and bordering on extensive National Trust land and the South Downs National Park, both very popular for keen ramblers or family days out. For the more outgoing, there are plenty of social groups in the village yet one can also enjoy a quiet drink in the nearby Selbourne Arms pub. There is a local shop with a post office only a short walk away but a more comprehensive selection of stores can be found in nearby Alton and Petersfield.

Within Easy Reach

For those that require regular transport use, the A3 is a short drive away and offers quick access into Guildford, London and the South Coast. Trumpeters enjoys close proximity to two mainline stations (Liss and Alton) which both provide direct trains into London Waterloo.

DIRECTIONS:

Travel on the A3 southbound, go through the Hindhead tunnel and continue for several miles. At the next roundabout some miles after the tunnel, take the third exit onto the B3006. Follow the road past the village of Empshott, until a pinch point is reached. Shortly after this is the left turning to Newton Valance. ‘Trumpeter’s is on the left, about 100 yards further on.
