Outside there is a communal courtyard to the front and the courtyard is accessed via a pathway from car park which only services the barns.

King Charles Barns are over 300 years old and were the barns attached to Upper House and earned their place in history in 1651 when King Charles II hid here after his escape from the Battle of Worcester. Upper House was owned by Francis Woolfe who was sympathetic to the Royalist cause. King Charles and his guide Richard Penderell arrived at Boscobel on 4 September 1651 and decided to try crossing the River Severn in Wales to enter France via Swansea or another sea port. They journeyed to Madeley after dark and upon arrival in Madeley were told by Francis Woolfe that the troops were guarding the ferry between Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury and that they had located the priest's hole in Upper House and therefore the King would have to hide elsewhere. The King and Penderell hid in the barn behind the corn and hay throughout the next day. They then returned to Penderell's house at Boscobel where the King hid in the famous oak tree for two days and then continued their journey via Doseley to Bristol and Brighton from where they sailed to France on 15 October 1651, where the King remained in exile until he was restored to the throne in 1660. During the 18th century the barn and adjoining buildings were used for the Market House of Madeley and later as an Engineering Works for the Coventry Gauge and Tool Company.

Please note that this property is leasehold. We understand there to be a 999 year lease, an approximate community charge of £100pa and an approximate ground rent of £20pa.
