The slab-block construction of Winchfield House, devised by the LCC team, was inspired by Le Corbusier's Unite d'Habitation in Marseilles, which members of the LCC had visited in 1951. The proportions were based on a combination of Le Corbusier’s 'Modulor' scale of proportions and the ‘Fibonacci’ number sequence. The expression of each maisonette as an individual element in the facade marked a new rigour and sophistication in slab design, and was referred to by G E Kidder Smith as 'probably the finest low-cost housing development in the world'.

The communal spaces are an important aspect of the development. There is a well-known grade II*-listed sculpture by Robert Clatworthy in the grounds, known as ‘Bull’.

Alton West is located on an expanse of land that runs along the north-eastern edge of Richmond Park, one of London’s finest Royal Parks. The nearest entrance at Roehampton Gate is a short walk from the apartment.

Barnes is the closest main line station and runs services to London Waterloo. There are regular buses to Hammersmith Underground with connections to Piccadilly, Hammersmith & City and District Lines. Regular local buses run to Putney Bridge Underground for connection to the District Line, and to Wandsworth and Kingston. The A3 is within a mile for good road access to the south of England. Heathrow airport is around 45-minutes’ drive.
