city deco | Mitre House has recently undergone extensive renovation to bring it back to its 1930s splendour, and it certainly feels very exclusive. It has a contemporary palette and finish, plus far reaching views across roof tops and church spires to the north. For a central city apartment, it feels very peaceful, yet it is just moments from the beach, the station and vibrant shops, bars and restaurants of Western Road, so this would be the perfect first home, commuter pad, or a stylish holiday let.

Why you’ll like it:

Whenever you walk through any city, especially down the high street; look up - you will almost always be amazed by the striking architecture found above the colourful shop fronts. Mitre House is a fantastic example of this, built in the Art Deco era, it has the linear brickwork and geometric balconies favoured at the time, and having undergone full refurbishment in recent years, entering the communal lobby is akin to arriving at a five star hotel. A tall steel lift, or alternatively, wide stone steps, take you to the fifth floor, past two sets of secure doors, and the carpeted corridor leads you to the right where your door is clearly marked.

Once inside it is immediately clear that this is a stunning, contemporary apartment. Oak floors flow along the hallway to the open plan living room and kitchen to the left, and this has a sleek finish with olive grey and cream units topped with practical surfaces, and into these the square sink and draining grooves have been seamlessly cut in. The washer dryer, dishwasher, electric oven and hob, fridge freezer and microwave are all integrated so there’s ample space in the rest of the room for a dining table and chairs and comfortable sofas. The views from the gracious multi pane windows offer lovely roof and treetop views with church spires piercing the skyscapes, and although they face north, you are so elevated that they flood the room with light throughout the day.

Returning to the hall, the bathroom is next on the left, and this is fully tiled in dove grey ceramic, and the suite is modern and fresh in white with a shower over the bath. The bedroom is at the end of the hall, and this is a generous double with plush fawn carpets underfoot and a a double built in wardrobe in an Eastern style, but in cream gloss with a chrome trim. The orientation and views are the same as the living room, and being so high up it is very peaceful for a tranquil night’s sleep.

Bear in mind:

Although this apartment has no outside space of its own, some of the cleanest beaches on the coast, and their promenade lawns are just a few minutes away on foot.
