Location

Polperro is one of the most picturesque and unspoilt fishing villages on the south Cornish coast. The village itself hides inside a narrow harbour entrance protected by hills. The centre of this much photographed village is without a doubt the historic harbour at the bottom of the village.

Smuggling is understood to have prospered since the 12th century when Polperro first developed as a port. By the late 18th century, much of the success of the smuggling trade through Polperro was controlled by Zephaniah Job (1749-1822), a local merchant who became known as "The Smuggler's Banker".

Fishing was traditionally the principal occupation of Polperro families. For centuries the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port, exporting throughout Europe. Today, Polperro is much quieter although it is still possible to buy fresh fish and sea food off the quay side from the several small commercial boats still in operation.

The village is largely protected by preservation orders which ensure that the original character and appearance of its buildings are not changed too much - one has to obtain permission to change the colour of paint on some of the houses. The coastline which Polperro is set on is part of an 80 mile stretch known as the South Cornwall Heritage Coast, with beautiful walks extending from from Polperro to Talland Bay in the east or Lansallos in the west, both of which enjoy their own beaches.

Communications to and from Cornwall have improved greatly in recent years; the A38 is now largely dual carriageway to the M5 at Exeter and provides a fast road access to within a few miles of Polperro. There is a mainline rail link to London at nearby Liskeard, which includes an overnight 'sleeper' service.
