History - Thomas Ellis Owen, (1805 - 1862), a renowned builder/architect who was responsible for the build and layout of early fashionable Southsea. Influenced by John Nash who had been busy designing the London Neo-classical terraces, Thomas Ellis Owen was designing a pleasant residential area for the growing professional and officer classes and remains today, one of Southsea's more sought after addresses. He built Kent Lodge circa 1843 and amongst others it was at times occupied by his nephew, a Dr Alfred Owen and later Colonel George Gawler KH who gained distinction in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo before moving on to govern South Australia.
