The property was originally built in the mid 19th century c1850'ish as a bungalow with a smaller property (spring Cottage) adjoining at the rear and on the land of the main cottage. We believe that Augusta Mary Tawke (a local dignitary) was one of the original owners. Around the turn of the century Miss Tawke had the original bungalow converted to the five bedroom house it is today for the benefit of her daughter Augusta S Tawke. The fountain situated on the front corner of the property was built by the Tawke's for the horse's coming up from the village loaded with bottled spa water from the Hockley Spa and for the horse's being exercised from the numerous stables that are still in the close proximity to Fountain Cottage.

Hockley is a large, well-served village in the South East of Essex between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book; however, is thought to have earlier origins following the discovery of a Roman coin and Saxon pottery within the burial mound, Plumberow Mount. Also of note within the village is the historic church of St. Peter and Paul dating from the medieval and possibly Norman period. The 280 acre ancient Hockley woods, now a Nature Reserve and protected as a site of Special Scientific Interest, is within easy reach.
