Historical Note:

Whim Square was built in the mid 18th century by Lord Islay, later the 3rd Duke of Argyll as part of a modern farm. He was an enterprising man being one of the original founders of the Royal Bank of Scotland and part of Whim Hall, as well as a great collector of trees and plans and a prominent member of the Scottish government of the time. He was a pioneer among those improving agriculture and the works at Whim Square was one of the first such experiments. It is believed that The Whim estate was also the site for the first porcelain manufacture in Scotland.

The old woodlands at The Whim are of considerable historical importance. The raised bog still retains a good variety of characteristic species and peatland habitats which have led to an area of 290 acres being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
