Id say that it was the location that initially attracted me to the house, says Vaughan. The property sits on the edge of Great Stukeley, so it feels quite separated from the rest of the houses in the village, and there are fields to the side and woodland to the back, so theres an air of peaceful seclusion. However, the fact that Huntingdon is only a stones throw away means that everything you might need on a day-to-day basis is extremely close at hand.
The original part of the house dates back to c1875, but over subsequent years it has been extended in every way possible. Its now a very spacious family home with generous rooms, a comfortable layout and quite a traditional style throughout. One of the nicest features is the old climbing pear tree that adorns the front of the house. It must have been planted at around the time the original cottage was built, and when it and the roses on the other side are in bloom, the house looks fantastic.
The main living room has big patio windows that open onto the garden, continues Vaughan, so theres a nice connection between inside and out when the weather is warm. And the garden is also a lovely feature of the property. Its very long and surrounded by mature shrubs and trees, so theres every shade of green you can imagine; its a view that Ive never tired of. It was also an amazing space when the children were young because theres plenty of room for them to run around and play, and it was great for a good game of hide-and-seek.
I love to cook, so Id say the kitchen is probably my favourite part of the house, says Vaughan, but apart from that I just love the feel and flow of the house as a whole; Im not sure Ill be able to find another quite like it.
When Im sitting in the garden I really could be anywhere; its peaceful and totally secluded, says Vaughan. Which belies the fact that the A1, A14 and M11 are within easy reach, so Cambridge and Peterborough are just a few minutes away, and there are plenty of good schools in the local area, so its a great place to bring up a family. In terms of location Id say it ticks all the boxes.
In the corner of the garden theres a sizeable brick-built barn, says Vaughan. It was originally a tack room and stable, and more recently weve used it as a games room, but Id say that it has the potential to be converted into anything from a home office to a gym.
When we first moved here I immediately felt at home, theres just something about it. The sense of being far from the madding crowd is one thats hard to come by these days - yet the madding crowd is 10 minutes away. Its lovely, says Vaughan. Its been a fabulous place to live for the past fourteen years, and I know that when I move it will leave a big hole in my life.
