Mitre Cottage is a three-bay four-oxen hall house dating from approximately 1430. This makes Mitre Cottage a Plantagenet house, coming from the reign of King Henry VI, an historical figure even at the time of Shakespeare.
The house would have been constructed open all the way to the roof, with an earth floor and a central fireplace. The smoke from the communal fire would have vented through a simple louvre in the roof. The house is timber framed, being constructed primarily from ?crucks', long A-frames joined at the top by cross bars. The sides and roof shape are created by extra timbers, with the walls constructed of cob on the outside and wattle and daub internally. The only footings used were stone plinths for the crucks to rest on, to avoid movement and decay. The cottage now a stylish Grade 2 listed home has been re-furbished to a high standard and retains many character features. Furthermore there is a one bedroom annex situated within the rear garden, ideal for relatives although has been used successfully as a bed & breakfast. The accommodation comprises: Entrance hall, dining room, sitting room, study, kitchen/breakfast room, utility room, ground floor bathroom, two first floor bedrooms with a "Jack & Jill" bathroom and courtyard rear garden.
