THE HISTORY
The Chantry has a fascinating history and is reputed to be the oldest secular building in the town and one of the oldest in Dorset, dating from the late 13th or early 14th century. Bridport was founded during the 10th century and in 1253 when it received its charter, it was developing with a thriving ropemaking industry.

The building is located south of the town about 50 yards outside the medieval walls and was constructed as a 2 storey tower. Originally known as "Dungeness" the building could have been used as a defence to the town.

During the 13th century it may have been used as a Toll House when craft from the harbour sailed up the river Brit and paid a toll to unload goods at the quay. The south elevation shows evidence of a flaming torch housed in a projecting stone which may have guided craft to a landing point.

In 1362 the building was used for accommodation for the chantry priest. From the 17th century changes were made to improve the domestic facilities.

Over the centuries the house has seen a whole number of changes and occupants including a local MP. The last residential tenants moved out in 1972 and The Chantry stood empty. West Dorset District Council took over the ownership as the successors to the Corporation of Bridport. In the 1980s restoration work was carried out by The Vivat Trust (a non profit making preservation trust) and was available for holiday lettings. Arts & crafts, furniture and general contents are included in the sale.

THE PROPERTY
The Chantry is a very historic detached period house Listed Grade II* for its Special or Historic Interest. It has solid stone walls under a tiled roof. The fascinating host of period features include 'shouldered' lintels, mullion windows, a 16th century stone fireplace, stone arches, 14th century wooden screen, flagstone floors, stained glass windows, exposed beams and stone, geometric wall and floor paintings, former stone circular staircase, exposed floor boards and exposed colour washed stone, a substantial inglenook fireplace to the kitchen, principal bedroom with 14th century fireplace and garderobe plus former altar. One of the astonishing features are the pigeon and dove holes.

The accommodation is arranged over 3 floors with views over the town and South Street.
