A magnificent portion of an elegant and historic house tucked away in beautiful formal gardens with the convenience of the town on its doorstep and the beach just a short walk away.
Tower House is the major portion of the country house formerly known as The Ryalls and was built circa 1834 by Commander William Henry Baptist Proby, a Plantagenet descendant and well respected naval commander during the early part of the 19th century. It was built in the Gothic style and has elegant rendered elevations with classic arch top windows, drip mouldings, quoin detailing and castellated roof that is in the main slated. The tower to the front façade is of particular merit with its beautiful oriel window and statue of St John the Baptist.
The original house has had an interesting and intriguing history related to Church of England clergy residents and was used as a military hospital after the First World War, before becoming a girls' private boarding school and subsequently a National Children's Home facility for 50 years, ending in 1990. The building was restored to an exceptionally high standard and divided into two residences in 1998 by Prowting Homes, with completion in 2000.
This Grade II Listed house retains a wealth of character features, all of which aid in creating a wonderful period ambience and the many of the rooms are elegantly proportioned with high ceilings and ornate cornicing. Worthy of particular mention is the stunning galleried stair hall, which is very much the heart of the house and there is a beautiful stained glass window to the half landing. This hall gives access to the reception and dining rooms and the kitchen which has a granite-topped central island. Beyond the kitchen is a study and a modern conservatory which has a delightful view over the courtyard.
To the first floor there is a roomy landing, which gives access to the four bedrooms and bathroom, the principal of which is a spacious room with an en-suite bathroom incorporating the beautiful oriel window.
Gardens and Grounds.
The property is approached from Ryalls Court over a hard-standing which provides parking for several vehicles and gives access to the garaging, which has a slated hip roof and clock tower. From here a gate leads down to the rear courtyard.
Further up Ryalls Court is the main entrance to the house with a short driveway (this is used for pedestrian access) where there are pillared wrought iron gates into the formal gardens and this is the perfect spot to admire this exceptionally handsome and imposing residence. The gardens have a huge amount of maturity and have been thoughtfully planted and tended over the years. There are borders containing a mass of colourful shrubs and the central path is flanked by topiary which leads your eye through to the wide doorway. There are also level areas of lawn, a paviered terrace and timber gazebo.
To the rear of the property is a sheltered paved courtyard where there is a pergola under which sits a hot tub. The courtyard has also been well planted and gives access to a large hobby room/workshop.
There is a garden shed along the front path of the house towards the garage large enough to house the lawn mower and garden tools.
Tower House is located in a prestigious development which was built around this stunning house in the late 1990s, after it closed as a school. It is tucked away within its formal gardens which create the most beautiful setting over which all the principal rooms have views, with the master and second bedrooms having glimpses to the sea. The house is conveniently positioned opposite a copse and next to a well-maintained green field area and is within a five minute walk of the town's amenities, the beach and this dramatic stretch of coastline, which is a rare quality for a home of such distinction.
