Many were committed to the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian thinker who founded Steiner Waldorf schools, biodynamic agriculture, anthroposophical medicine and much more.

There are currently about 70 people of all ages living at Hoathly Hill. There are weekly meetings, monthly work days, Saturday cafes and a celebration of the festivals of the year. The main house, the outbuildings and the land were bought at auction in the 1970s and there was a joint mortgage until the 80s, when a 'restructuring' took place and most of the living units were sold as leases to individual leaseholders.

Hoathly Hill Association operates a 'mandate system': one person or a group of people are given the mandate to look after a certain area, such as development, finances, the soft landscape, the hard landscape, car parks or meetings.

Some of the units and most of the land is currently under the stewardship of Hoathly Hill Trust. Hoathly Hill Trust is a charitable organisation facilitating and supporting community, environmental educational projects, such as Hoathly Hill Sculpture Studio, Hoathly Hill Forest Garden, The Herb Garden, The Bee Garden, Hoathly Hill Community Supported Agriculture, Pericles Theatre Company and The Elderly Project. We also have a community biomass boiler for our heating and hot water, run by Hoathly Hill Renewable Energy.
