Why you’ll like it:
The stunning Regency terraces of Brunswick Square are Grade I Listed, and are integral to Brighton and Hove’s unique identity as a cosmopolitan city of style and taste. They were built in 1825 by architect Charles Busby as Brighton had become very fashionable for the top tiers of society, and they were suitably impressed by the curved ‘Hove Cream’ facades with their Ionic and Corinthian columns. Although many of the houses have now been converted into apartments, they still attract many, and Brunswick is still one of the most prestigious addresses in the city.
This apartment takes pride of place on the first floor which was originally the grand reception halls in which entertaining took place. For this reason the ceilings are deliriously high, and festooned with the most impressive and beautiful plasterwork. The full height windows in the living room have the original curved glass to follow the line of the building, and these open to the balcony where you can drink in the breaktaking views of the surrounding architecture, the promenade and the sea. There is space to sit out here, and also the curved bay creates a wonderful space for a formal dining table and chairs. The wooden floor in this room is bespoke, with a geometric pattern, and the kitchen area brings the room into the 21st Century with a contemporary finish. The units to the left are for office storage, and these include a pull out desk and filing cabinets; to the right is a the area for cooking, and this is separated from the main living space by a breakfast bar, so guests or family can sit and chat to you as you cook. The aubergine gloss units house the integrated washing machine and fridge freezer, but the range cooker, dishwasher, tumble dryer and washing machine are freestanding. As was always intended by the original architects; this is a room in which to entertain, yet it is equally a restful room in which to sit and watch the sun go down on a balmy summer’s evening.
A corridor stretches back to the rear of the building, and from this is bedroom two which has a newly fitted and glamorous shower room next door, so it is perfect for guests. This bedroom shares the same lofty ceilings, and has a wonderfully tall window looking out over the internal courtyard below.
As you reach the end of the hallway, it splits with a short staircase leading down to the master bedroom which has plush latte carpets, another gracious bay window, and a dressing table built into the alcove. There is ample space for a king size bed without compromising on floor space, and the en suite bathroom is luxurious as it is fully tiled in marble and has a corner jacuzzi bath with a shower above.
Returning upstairs, another short flight takes you to bedroom two which is again a very good size with lots of light from the double aspect windows, and this has a separate seating area plus an en suite shower room with the same marble decor.
This is a unique apartment with a wealth of original features, character and style. It really does impress from the minute you walk in, yet there is still potential to add your own stamp if you chose.
Bear in mind:
Due to the unusual layout, this apartment has three entrances from the communal hallway; two of which enter into the rear bedrooms. These could therefore be rented out as self contained holiday rooms as they are both en suite - food for thought.
