The Story

The beautiful period house at The Hendre is not only located in a simply breath-taking setting but it also offers a myriad of leisure and lifestyle opportunities

Taking a swim in the pool, playing a game of tennis or heading out across the spectacular countryside for an afternoon walk.
Pwll-Y-Cwm, which sits in excess of six acres of land, offers all sorts of opportunities for enjoying leisure time and outdoor pursuit.
The exquisite, five bedroom period house, which is home to Michael and Diane Fitchett, also holds great potential for anyone seeking to run a business from home.
A beautiful stone and brick barn has been converted into a magnificent wedding and entertainment venue and also has planning consent to be converted into a four or five-bedroom house.
"This is an incredible property, which could be enjoyed in many different ways," said Michael. "This is effectively a home of three parts - the main house, with its enclosed courtyard and gardens, the entertainment barn, which has its own lawns and facilities, and then another barn, where we have workshops and storage for our plant & equipment. Attached to that is a paddock, where we keep a few animals, this could be used for Equestrian facilities.

MOUNTAIN VIEWS
Michael and Diane moved to Pwll-Y-Cwm, which is just three miles from attractive Monmouth, some 13 years ago.
The house, which was once a working farm, dates back to the 1500s and was originally two yeomen's cottages, which were later joined together and extended.
"We were drawn to it because of the location," he said.
"It really is unbelievable - we have panoramic views right across to the Brecon Beacons and despite being well-situated for major roads, we have complete peace and quiet."

PERIOD STYLE
The main house, which still features the likes of fireplaces and beams, has three storeys, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms on the first floor.
This includes two guest bedrooms with their own bathrooms and the sumptuous master suite, with its spacious dressing room and en suite bathroom.
On the top floor, are two more bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as a sewing room.
"It is a wonderful house; we refurbished it from top to bottom, ensuring it all worked well for us but that we retained the character at the same time," he said.

INVITING SPACES
On the ground floor, the reception spaces include the drawing room, sitting room, dining room, library and study, as well as the kitchen breakfast room and conservatory.
"The drawing room is an incredible place to spend time because it has such amazing views," said Michael. "My wife loves the kitchen, which is a Smallbone design and has an Aga.
"We tend to use the library, study and dining room when we are entertaining. We love all the rooms here."

UNIQUE HOME
The entertaining barn was converted by the Fitchetts and has been used for their own parties and celebrations as well as commercially for weddings, meetings and functions
They have also enjoyed celebrations out in the beautiful grounds, with friends and family relaxing round the pool or playing tennis.
"We are relocating now to be closer to family but it is proving incredibly difficult to find a house that is as well-situated as this and that comes anywhere close in terms of what it offers," he explained.
"This has been a fantastic home and we will miss the views and the tranquillity. It really has been a quite phenomenal place to live."

Ground floor accommodation

Accessing the property from the front door into a porch, with a pitched roof, wooden beams and glass panels leads you into the main reception hall which is used by the current owners as a sitting room, it has oak floors and a wood burner. Stairs to the first floor are off the hallway and doors leading to the formal drawing room, this room has triple aspect views French doors leading to the garden and a wood burner with an inglenook fireplace and wooden mantle finishes the room off beautifully. The library has bespoke hand made fitted units by Smallbone on either side, it has that "cosy" feel the perfect place to put your feet up and read a good book. The formal dining room is elegant again with triple aspect over looking the gardens; the solid oak wooden flooring compliments the room. The kitchen has an electric Aga, a featured Centre Island, a range of Smallbone fitted units and tiled flooring and French doors lead into the octagonal shaped conservatory. From the kitchen you will find a very spacious utility room with a door leading to the garden. There is also a pantry room and a cupboard housing the boiler, an inner hallway takes you to the study a downstairs cloakroom and a further storage area.

First floor accommodation

On the first floor you will find 3 exceptional size bedrooms all with en suite facilities. The Master Suite is a beautiful suite divided into 4 parts. The bedroom area has stunning views over the garden and an archway leads you through to a dressing room with walk in wardrobe; again designed and hand made by Smallbone, from there you enter the en suite there is a larger than average double shower, a claw bath facing the window and under floor heating makes the room warm on those cold winter nights. From the dressing room you will find stairs leading to the second floor where you will find another sitting room / sewing room, there is a small door that leads into the other bedrooms. The master suite further benefits from a staircase leading directly to the kitchen. You will also find further storage and an airing cupboard on this floor.

Second floor accommodation

The two bedrooms on this floor can be accessed from a staircase from the main landing. The rooms both have pitched roofs with exposed wooden beams. The larger of the two has a lovely sitting room and would make a perfect room for a teenager. A Family Bathroom services both these rooms.

Entertainment Barn / Dwelling

The Entertainment Barn also has planning permission to be converted into a 4/5-bedroom home if desired. It is truly spectacular with a high pitched roof, exposed wooden beams and an open Fire place, not that its used very often as the barn has under floor heating. From the entrance hallway with a seating area, you will find ladies, gent's and disabled facilities. Walking into the main barn there is a door to a fully equipped bar with a sink and glass-washer. The bar itself is U shaped with ample room to sit up to 100 guests in the main banqueting area. There is a fully equipped industrial kitchen that has everything including the crockery! A large storage room is used to store extra seats and tables. There are French doors either side of the barn and its own garden with a patio area, a raised Koi carp fishpond and views over the countryside. The music and lighting comes on outside as well so for those guests who want to grab some fresh air they can still enjoy the party. The first floor can be accessed from the external staircase, it's the perfect place for a live band or disco to setup, there is also an office on this floor.

SETTING THE SCENE

Driving through the electric gates the drive splits to the right for the house, the driveway in front is the parking for the Entertainment Barn.
