Growth in employment prospects at Invergordon (12 miles) and Nigg (5 miles) have brought about an opportunity for the expansion of the settlement which will assist in supporting and sustaining local services. There is significant growth expected in the area.

The sale of the Nigg fabrication site on the Cromarty Firth to Global energy in 2011 has brought in a new influx of workers to the area. There has also been an increase in economic activity at the docks in Invergordon.

Inverness College, the largest partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands is located in Inverness and has a new campus currently being built.

Hill of Fearn is a small village near the Royal Burgh of Tain in Easter Ross. The village is on the B9165 road between the A9 trunk road and Portmahomack.

The idyllic settlement of Fearn (population 310) provides local services to the surrounding agricultural community including shops and a primary school. Fearn also has a railway station that runs on the Inverness to Wick and Thurso line. The village lies some 5 miles to the south east of Tain, one of Scotland's oldest historic towns. Tain has a wider range of shops, supermarkets, banks and professional services as well as primary and secondary schools.

There is a mainline railway station at Inverness providing frequent services to Perth and Aberdeen, and the A9(T) road is within easy reach. Inverness Airport provides numerous flights to London and other destinations.
