RYDE The largest town on the Isle of Wight, Ryde has six miles of sandy beaches and shallow coastal waters, making it a summer favourite with holidaymakers. A canoe lake, swimming pool and paddling pool add to its warm-weather attractions but theres also plenty to do when the sun isn't shining.

Ryde Pier, built in 1813, is the oldest pier in England and one of the longest in the UK. It stretches for nearly half a mile and is open year-round. The seafront also has a childrens play area, a pitch and putt, an ice rink and a bowling alley.

Union Street has a good mix of independent shops, with Liz Earles flagship store here as well as the Royal Victoria Arcade, which is home to antique shops full of forgotten trinkets just waiting to be discovered.

Theres plenty to discover in the rolling countryside surrounding Ryde, indulge in Island wines at nearby Rosemary Vineyard - the Island's largest vineyard with self-guided tours, a cafe and a well-stocked shop. Take a step back in time with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway which can be picked up at Smallbrook, just a short train ride away from Ryde pier.

East of Ryde, the pretty villages of Seaview and Bembridge are popular with visiting sailors and offer great seafood in friendly pubs. Nearby, sixteenth century Bembridge Windmill is worth a visit simply for the picture postcard setting.

RYDE HARBOUR Ryde harbour is a tidal harbour that dries out at low tide located just east of Ryde pier on the north east coast of the Isle of Wight. It was built in 1990 and has both pontoon and on the wall moorings and provides a wide range of facilities to visiting yachtsmen.
The harbour has four main pontoons enclosed by a harbour arm, providing a sheltered haven for small craft. Berthing for larger craft and long keel yachts is provided on the harbour arm. There is provision for 100 permanent berths and up to 100 visiting boats, the majority of which are family sailing and motor cruisers varying in length from five to twelve metres. A wide range of facilities and amenities are available for all craft, making it especially suitable for visiting families. The mooring fees are very competitive, thus making Ryde one of the best value for money places to stay on the south coast.
