Charlestown Founded in the late 1700s, was planned by the local landowner Charles Rashleigh, whom the village was named after, for the export of copper and china clay and became a small but very busy port.
The success of the port provided the village work and housing for local people with hand in hand industries such as boat building, rope and net making, lime burning and pilchard curing. *The Charlestown Estate bell was used to summon workers and to announce the arrival and departure of ships to and from the harbour. The bell was last running in 1938 and went missing for many years, but was found in Old Mill House at the top of Charlestown Road.
Largely unspoiled by modern development, the harbour is lined by pretty colour-washed cottages Even today it is still a working harbour for local fishermen as well as providing a safe haven for a famous collection of old ships. This picturesque and characterful village has attracted many film projects, the latest of which is the remake of the renowned Poldark series based on the books by Cornish Author Winston Graham.
The nearby town of St Austell offers numerous shops, supermarkets and a leisure centre, plus a mainline railway station to London Paddington. The attractive coastal town of Fowey just 7½ miles distant has a range of shops, restaurants and bars and excellent sailing facilities.
