Previously called 'Hanslape' from the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, right up until the Victoria Era, in Old English it refers to 'a muddy place or slope, belonging to a man called Hama'. There was once a castle in the parish (that later became Castlethorpe) that was the seat of the Maudit family. In 1215 William Maudit had started a rebellion against King John of England and was defeated in battle by the King's men. Following King John's death, however, Maudit reclaimed his seat and founded a grand park in the parish, remnants of which can still be found in Hanslope today. The castle building has long since disappeared, though the grassy mounds of the motte-and-bailey groundworks can still be seen clearly.
In the Medieval period Hanslope was a market town and in Victorian times the area was renowned for producing fine lace. Nowadays, Hanslope still retains a thriving village community, with local shops, public houses, schools and village sports teams and yet it is just 8 miles north of Central Milton Keynes, which enjoys one of the largest undercover shopping centres in the UK, extensive leisure facilities to cater for all needs, a fast and frequent train service to London Euston and the north of England and Junction 15 of the M1 motorway is some 6 miles distant and Junction 14 approximately 8 miles.
