Built in 1770 for George Donisthorpe, Steward to Lord Ilchester of Melbury Sampford in Dorset who had inherited the Royal Manor of Somerton from his relative Colonel Strangways. It has been called Donisthorpe House ever since and was also home to George Donisthorpe's son. The house is an attached dwelling constructed of Blue Lias stone elevations with a symmetrical front façade with sash windows and a stone pillared lead flat roofed porch over the front door. The accommodation, which is extensive and orientated to family occupation, is arranged principally over 2 floors with the addition of a cellar with wine bins and original stone meat shelves and hooks together with extensive second floor attic accommodation providing 5 rooms (formerly occupied by staff). The sitting room has an ornate cast iron grate with carved marble mantle. The drawing room also has a pretty cast iron fireplace and hearth.
