The Story

Every day when the owner of the house on Ridgeway looks out from the windows of his four bedroom home he notices something different in the scenery around him whether it is the changing colours of rolling hills behind him or the mist rising from the Bristol Channel in front, the picturesque surroundings of his Newport home never fail to entrance. “I bought the house 12 years ago for the views,” he admitted. “It was in a fabulous position, where it had views to both the front and the back.
“At the time it was smaller than it is today, so we added another bedroom and en suite bathroom upstairs and a couple more rooms downstairs. “All the work we did was carried out with the aim of
making the most of the beautiful views we had here.”

EVENINGS ON THE TERRACE
Today the house boasts four double bedrooms, including the master bedroom, with its private bathroom and dressing room, and a family bathroom. There are four reception rooms and an
impressive kitchen breakfast room. “I moved the rooms around and reconfigured the layout so that the kitchen breakfast room and drawing room are now at the back of the house,” he explained. “I
built a terrace outside the drawing room. In the summer it is lovely to keep those French windows open and to sit outside watching the sun set over the hills behind.”

DESIGNER TOUCHES
The entire house has been redecorated in his time there, with everything completed to the highest standard. “The kitchen has under-floor heating and granite work surfaces. I chose top-of-the-range fixtures and fittings for the kitchen and the bathrooms.” While offering high levels of comfort and ease of modern living, the house does also have a traditional edge in its décor. “I like the Georgian era and have tried to give it that feel throughout,” he explained. “I have chosen wallpapers from the
Colefax and Fowler trellis designs, for example.”

WELCOMING FRIENDS
In the summer, the owner entertains friends in the drawing room at the back of the house or out on the terrace. In the winter, the reception room at the front is warm and welcoming.
“This house is great for entertaining as it has a nice flow to it. We have had some lovely Christmases here and plenty of occasions out in the back in the garden and on the terrace.”
Overnight guests are accommodated in the beautifully presented guest rooms, all of which are a good size. “The bedrooms here are all nice, with fitted wardrobes and bespoke radiator covers. One
bedroom has double-aspect views towards the church and the reservoir and hills.”

LIFE BALANCE
In addition to its magnificent views, the house enjoys great convenience. It is located on the edge of Newport, where it can access the many amenities of the city, as well as the beauty spots
of the surrounding area. “This location is perfect because it is just like being in the countryside yet you are just two minutes’ drive from the M4 motorway. From there you can get to Cardiff, Bristol
and Bath easily. There is also good access to London from here, either via the motorway or by train – you can walk to the station from here.” With the Celtic Manor golf and country resort close by, and the rolling hills of Monmouthshire and the Brecon Beacons easy to reach, there is plenty to do here at weekends. “This location does have it all – the benefits of living on the edge of a city, as well as all the beauty of the surrounding area,” he added.
