Location
Nine miles south west of Bath, a former mining town, Radstock has its roots in the Iron Age (with its close proximity to the Fosse Way) and was arguably the Jewel in the Crown of the Somerset Coalfield. The Collieries (of which the larger proportion was owned by the local Lords of the Manor, the Waldegrave family) were probably at their peak in the Edwardian era (when the house was built), with production tailing off in the 1940 s and 1950 s and finally ceasing in 1973 (at Kilmersdon and Writhlington). Mentioned as stoche (or stockade) in the Doomesday book the town takes its name from the reddish (or rad) marl stone found locally. The town has a regular bus service into Bath and offers a variety local shops and amenities including a large Cooperative supermarket and a well-known industrial museum. Norton Radstock College is just up the road and the much sought after rebuilt, newly re-launched Writhlington School is within 2 miles. Alternatively nearby Midsomer Norton offers a wider range of amenities including Doctors' and Dentists' surgeries, an excellent leisure centre, chemists', library, and several supermarkets plus further local shops. The World Heritage City of Bath (within 11 miles) offers a wide range of shopping, sporting and leisure facilities, including Bath Abbey, The Theatre Royal, The Recreation Ground and a wide array of excellent restaurants and London Paddington (approx. 90 minutes), Bristol Temple Meads and the West Country rail network.
