The Story

For the past eight years, life for the Gwythers has been played out against the magnificent backdrop of Cascade House. Here the family of eight have spent time together, celebrating special occasions and enjoying the beauty of their surroundings. The oldest part of the Grade II Listed house dates back to 1766, explains Diane. She and her husband Michael believe it was originally a cottage or farmhouse, which was then extended significantly in the 1800s or 1900s and became a home for colliery managers working in the area.
"The extensions saw wings added on either side of the house, which made it into a much larger property and gave it a good layout," she explains. "We have six children and so were looking for a spacious home and this one was perfect for us. We also loved the grounds and the fact it was so peaceful."

ELEGANT INTERIORS
After moving in Diane upgraded the interiors at Cascade House, redecorating and giving rooms an opulent feel.
Today it offers a balance of elegant rooms, featuring period fireplaces and sash windows and blinds in fabrics from Harlequin, with comfortable, welcoming spaces.
"There is a family drawing room, which has a large wood-burner and is the centre of the house; this is a lovely, cosy room," she says.
The beautiful kitchen has been fully fitted and, with a breakfast area, is also well used on a daily basis.
"Then we have a dining room, with a lovely table that can seat 10 or 12 people, which is perfect for special occasions."

CELEBRATIONS AT HOME
All year round there are important occasions to celebrate at Cascade House, from birthdays and anniversaries to Christmases.
"We have had some lovely parties here - my youngest daughter's birthday is on Christmas Eve so we usually have a party then. We have also had some 'Come Dine With Me' nights and dinner parties; this is the kind of dining room you wouldn't have in most houses so we like to show it off a little!" With a generous terrace as well, summer parties are often hosted out in the garden.
"You could even hold a small family wedding here as there is space for a marquee out on the lawn," she adds.

A BOUNTY OF BEDROOMS
The sleeping accommodation at the property is spread out, offering a high degree of privacy and making it ideal for a family with children of different ages.
The master suite, with its bedroom, bathroom and dressing room is at one end of the house. There are six further bedrooms on this floor, plus two family bathrooms and a store room. The guest bedroom has its own en suite shower room.
"The two wings really create three different areas so the house could be perfect for different generations who want to live together," Diane explains. "In addition, there is also a very large, light bedroom on the top floor of the house."

FLEXIBLE SPACES
There is huge potential for new owners to enjoy Cascade House in different ways. Not only do the sizeable grounds and house present opportunities but there is also a former coach house.
"This is really just a shell at the moment but subject to the relevant planning permission it could be converted into a great studio or annexe. My daughter is a hairdresser and she has suggested it could be a good salon!"
Exquisite period features abound at Cascade House and there are rooms that can be used as offices, recreation spaces and hobby areas.

TRANQUILLITY AND SPACE
It is hard to believe that the house is just a short walk from the centre of Penpedairheol and from the train station.
"It feels so rural here yet we are very convenient for everything," says Diane. "We are just 20 minutes from the M4 and 30 minutes from Cardiff, and there are lots of leisure facilities in Caerphilly too."
"This is a lovely place to be if you like walking or cycling - we often go off on our bikes - and you can get to the Brecon Beacons easily too."
She adds: "We are only moving now as we are relocating to be closer to family but we have loved being here and will miss the tranquillity and all the space."

Setting The Scene

The mature grounds of about three-quarters of an acre at Cascade House feature an abundance of mature trees and shrubs, as well as lawns.
There is a large flagstone terrace, a pond and water feature, and a built-in barbecue.
"It is a sunny garden, with lots of birds - there is nothing nicer than sitting outside and listening to them," says Diane. At the front, wrought iron gates lead to an impressive driveway, with a turning circle, and there is ample parking for several vehicles.
