THE STORY

There was something welcoming about Brooks Farm, at Stisted, even before Martine had turned it into the house of her dreams.
The beautiful grade II listed property, which dates back in part to the 15th century and was once a heavy horse farm, still had a wealth of country character.
"As soon as I stepped through the front door it just seemed to give me a hug," says Martine. "I knew there was a lot of work I wanted to do to restore the house and to make it into a wonderful place to both entertain and work. It was daunting but I had built a new property five years before and so knew what we were taking on."
It took nearly nine months of work to transform Brooks Farm into a home to meet her needs, during which time she lived in the guest cottage.
"Seeing it all come together was absolutely fabulous," she adds. "It became an even more beautiful rural home."

FINISHING TOUCHES

Today the six-bedroom house offers a sumptuous feast of country character, together with a high quality finish and some luxurious modern touches. These include some eco features and interior design solutions.
"I love cooking and so the kitchen, for example, has been designed to incorporate everything I wanted," Martine says.
This features an electric Aga, a number of integrated Miele appliances and a contemporary cook's island.

SIMPLY SPECTACULAR

Brooks Farm has an abundance of magnificent beams and studwork, which help create its inviting atmosphere.
"I have a lovely reception hall, where I have an inglenook fireplace: when you sit beside the roaring fire there, with a glass of Red wine, in the winter, it is just superb."
Every room exudes character and charm, especially the beautiful master bedroom suite. This breath-taking space also encompasses a relaxation or dressing area, plus a luxury en suite bathroom.
"This is a spectacular part of the house - creating it was a gamble but it couldn't have turned out better. It is perfect."

LEISURE TIME

Guests can choose to stay in the main house or to have their own self-contained accommodation in the guest cottage: "I have used the cottage for friends and relatives to stay in but it could always be let out as a holiday property - I also thought about having glamping here at one time."
The leisure complex at Brooks Farm could certainly enhance any holiday business that was ever run there. This not only has a swimming pool but also a kitchen, gym, changing rooms and even an office suite.
"The pool is lovely and the office area has been very useful for board meetings for my companies. I have even had caterers in for formal board room dinners there - it has been great to have the space to do this away from the house."

WONDERFUL LIFE

Entertaining at the property has also given Martine great pleasure.
The space inside the house has been perfect for parties, and, with the pool and gardens too, there are plenty of other places to spill out into.
"I can have dinner parties for up to 14 people in the formal dining room or 10 of us around the table for a kitchen supper," says Martine. "Then I also have the entertaining barn outside, which has been great fun. Friends often come round with their children on a Sunday afternoon in the summer for a barbecue. They might also swim or play rounders in the field. With so much outside space the children can just go off and explore - this is a wonderful place for kids."

CONVENIENT LOCATION

There is a small stable at Brooks Farm but new owners with equestrian interests could look into developing these facilities. With so much land there could also be possibilities for those with other outdoor interests too.
"It is rural here yet I am just 15 minutes' drive from the M11 and 20 to 25 minutes from Stansted. I can be in Colchester or Chelmsford in 20 minutes and am within easy reach of some good restaurants and places to visit at weekends."
She adds: "I will miss the peace and quiet here when I leave, as well as the house itself, which has so much history and has been such a superb place to live."

WHATS NEARBY
