The Story

Pretty Alderbourne Cottage has a long history in the area but today offers a beautiful blend of the old and the new, and includes an annexe

Sitting out in his sunny garden, enjoying a long lunch with friends, the owners of Alderbourne Cottage make the most of the rural setting of their home.
Nestled in beautiful wooded grounds of approximately half an acre, the thatched property is surrounded by fields, which were once part of a country estate.
“The house is Grade II Listed and I believe it dates back to around 1790. It was once the lodge house to the manor,” he said.
“I bought it in 1996, having been attracted to its secluded position, it was within easy reach of Gerrards Cross and yet felt off the beaten track too.”
He added, “I have lived in character homes before and rebuilt properties for English Heritage and so knew a lot about older houses.”

WELCOME HOME
Over the years since then he has worked his way through Alderbourne Cottage, updating it sympathetically and improving it where necessary.
“Everything has been done very carefully and is now a blend of the old and the new,” he said. “It is a quirky home but it is also a very easy property to live in.”
There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms in the main part of the inviting single storey house.
“This is a very warm house,” he said. “The drawing room, where there is a wood burner, is particularly cosy and the dining room is nice because it opens on to the garden, which faces south.”

EXTRA LIVING SPACE
The annexe, which offers self contained accommodation, was created by the current owner and has its own entrance.
“It also has its own sitting room with a kitchen area in it, as well as a double bedroom, shower room and cloakroom.
“We have let it out and this has worked quite well for us but it could be useful in all sorts of other ways for someone else,” he said.
“It could also be brought back into the main house quite easily, which would give someone a home with four to five bedrooms and an en suite bathroom.”

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS
The grounds of Alderbourne Cottage feature formal gardens, a driveway and a workshop and polytunnel, both of which have power. There is also a summer house.
“The workshop could be made into a four car garage quite easily or it could be a good hobby space,” he said.
The gardens are tranquil places in which to relax, he continued. There is a pleasant area of decking with a hot tub.
“Everyone says what a lovely place this is when they come to visit,” he added.

CITY AND COUNTRY
One of the great benefits of life at the cottage is its superb connections. It is within easy reach of the M25 and the M40 and it is quick to reach central London and Heathrow Airport.
“This could be a perfect place to have a home if you worked in the West End and wanted somewhere nice to escape to at the end of a busy day,” he said.
“We have been very happy here and have spent many wonderful afternoons just relaxing outside in the sunshine with friends.”

ATTRACTIVE VILLAGE
The nearby village of Fulmer is much sought after for its country appeal, as well as its convenience.
Set in the beautiful valley of the River Alderbourne, it is on the edge of Gerrards Cross and yet still embodies a traditional English village feel.
There are several annual events in the village, including Fulmer Day in June, the Bonfire Night fireworks celebrations.
The population of the village is small and the community is both active and welcoming.

Setting The Scene

The driveway, lined with trees and hedgerow, is shared with only one other residence situated several hundred yards beyond. The driveway leads to parking spaces in front of, and to the side of the house. Opposite, there is a large workshop and pollytunel both suitable for four or five vehicles. South facing, the house sits in an secluded position and to the front there is a paved terrace with pergola and a further terrace to the side is used for barbecues. There are extensive side and rear lawns with oak, ash and beech trees. To the north side of the property there is mature woodland with wild rhododendrons.

Black Park Country Park is approximately ½ mile away where there is superb off road horse riding country. Fulmer Village is within a mile and has a junior school, church and popular pub/restaurant. There are many golf clubs in the area including the prestigious Stoke Park Club which also has tennis and a spa.
The town of Gerrards Cross is about 2 miles away and offers M&S Simply Food, Waitrose and a large Tesco store. Gerrards Cross has many stylish shops, cafes and restaurants, and a railway station providing fast and frequent services to London.
