Description

Ty Mawr is noteworthy for being the earliest surviving house in Glamorgan dated by inscription, with a date of 1583. The main walls of the house are consistent with that date, but there are additions from the eighteenth century and later. Retained features of the original hall house include chamfered oak beams in the hall and a Tudor-arched fireplace on the first floor. The whole house was very much altered, however, with inserted fireplaces, staircase and structural joinery, in c1900.

The large hall is approached through a door from an enclosed porch. It has a picture window overlooking the garden and features a traditional open fireplace with an arched tile surround. From the hall there are doors to the other principal reception rooms and a substantial oak staircase leading to the first floor. The character of the hall is enhanced by its beamed ceiling.

On the west side of the hall, the sitting room provides a comfortable family space with a bay window overlooking the garden and a character open fireplace To the east, the study and the well-proportioned dining room also feature character fireplaces and enjoy aspects across the front lawn. . To the north there is access to a rear vestibule and a small bathroom.
Located to the rear of the house, the kitchen sits adjacent to the breakfast room and is elegantly appointed with a range of dove-grey units and integrated appliances. A utility room and pantry provide further space for appliances and storage.

On the first floor, a central landing accessed via the principal staircase leads to 4/5 bedrooms and a large family bathroom. A secondary staircase to the west of the house provides access to a smaller landing that leads to another bedroom and a further large bathroom.
