Glenrothes is one of Fife's principal centres with a population of over 40,000 persons rising to around 50,000 if one includes the immediately adjacent opportunities of Leslie and Markinch. The town is a former New Town which saw rapid and major investment in the post-War years, along with a distinctive planning regime, in line with the general New Town policy across Scotland. It is the centre of Local Government in Fife and also a headquarters base for other important bodies and agencies. Road links are strong and mainline railway station links exist to the east and south-east of the town.
