The Story

Every time the owners of the house on Main Road arrive home they are reminded of the uniqueness of their property. When they first saw the house which was originally built in the 1950s it was the exterior of the property that grabbed their attention.
“It was a small, two- bedroom bungalow, situated in a beautiful spot back then,” explains one of them. “I just saw what I thought we could make of it.” Over the years, the couple have carried out two extensions and transformed both the interior and the gardens into their perfect family home. “It’s such an eye-catching property,” he adds. “When people drive or walk past, I don’t think anybody fails to look at it.”

Tailoring to size

The extensions gave space for two additional bedrooms as well as a dining room.
“It took the place of the garage, so after we extended I also built a new, large garage at the end of the drive.” Throughout the interior of the property there is a high quality finish: granite work surfaces in the kitchen and breakfast room and a marble hearth on the feature fireplace in the main reception room. With the conservatory hallway and an abundance of windows, natural light floods through the home. “We decorated it in neutral colours – my wife likes creams and whites – in keeping with the style of the property,” he adds.

Picture Perfect

The owners bought their home 30 years ago as a family with young children. “It makes an absolutely perfect family home: the swimming pool and the large garden with extensive lawns were great for our kids. It is secure and safe as everything is fenced in – it’s ideal for a young family, and also for owners with pets.” He adds that one of the things he has enjoyed most living in the home is its sense of privacy. “It is surrounded by tall trees so it is totally private and I’ve also bought a small piece of woodland at the back, which guarantees that privacy in future as well,” he describes. “Once you’re inside, you’re in a world of your own.”

Dance the night away

The owner says his favourite place to relax is in the drawing room at the rear of the property. “I love spending time there. It looks out across the terraced area in the garden, and the French windows are brilliant, especially in the summer months,” he explains. With this ability to open up the rear of the house the terrace is also excellent for entertaining. “We’ve had many a party and function there,” he adds. “We have put a marquee on the top lawn for major birthdays – it’s a large enough area and a beautiful venue. My 50th birthday in particular stands out. It was wonderful, there was space for a dance floor, music area, bar and catering.”

The right track

The family have found the location perfect, with excellent transport connections.
“There are trains and buses running into Cardiff every 15 minutes, and then there are good connections to other parts of the country from Cardiff and Newport - you can reach London in two and a half hours on the train.” It has also been a brilliant region for exploring on foot, with picturesque rural walks. “There’s the Parc Penallta about a mile away – you can see it from our house,” he says. “It’s an old industrial mine from years ago, but it has been turned into lakes and woodland, with great walking areas. People come from miles to spend time there.”

Local Roots

The owners are going to miss this perfect location but will take with them three decades of memories. “My wife was born in this area and I owned a business across the road, so we have always loved this part of the country. It’s just lovely,” he says. “But this house is unique for the area – you won’t see anything like it for at least five miles.” He says that, now that their children have moved on, the property is too large for him and his wife. “The house is incredibly large for a bungalow, so we will miss that more than anything. We have been very happy here.”

Setting the scene

The rear garden is tiered with a lawn, a heated swimming pool and a garden pool house. “There is major planting,” explains one of the owners. “My wife loves the garden so it’s immaculate. I think she’d rather be in the garden than in the house!”
The couple have employed a gardener over the years, so the space has been kept to a pristine standard. “Everybody who visits compliments the flowers and shrubbery when they see the front garden,” he adds. “And then in the rear there are some lovely bushes that my wife has planted over the years. For anyone who loves being outside, it’s paradise.”
