Location - Surrounded by miles of delightful coast and countryside, much of which is in the ownership of the National Trust, Fowey is a charming seaside town with beautiful period houses, excellent restaurants and of course a natural harbour that provides some of the best sailing waters in the county and access to the town by water at all states of the tide.
The River Fowey is a charming and picturesque estuary which meets the sea off south Cornwall between Readymoney Cove and Polruan and stretches upstream for about six miles to the historic town of Lostwithiel, with a good deep water channel until just short of Golant. The area is renowned for its safe anchorage and sailing.
The town itself provides an excellent range of small shops catering for most day to day needs, along with very good restaurants, boutiques and galleries. Two local yacht clubs organise competitive sailing throughout the summer season and Fowey Harbour Commissioners maintain a very well run port for the benefit of leisure and commercial craft alike.
The novelist Daphne Du Maurier came to Fowey in her early twenties and immediately fell in love with the town, living for many years at Bodinnick where her parents bought a house in 1926. It was here she wrote The Loving Spirit which was published in 1931.The Fowey Festival was inspired by Du Maurier and is an important event in the Fowey calendar.
There are mainline rail stations at nearby Bodmin Parkway, St. Austell, Par and Lostwithiel. The south coast ports of Polperro and Looe are about 15 miles to the east and the old market town of Liskeard is about 18 miles distant. There are also daily flights to London from Newquay Airport on the north Cornish coast.
The Property - Situated in the heart of the town, Victoria Steps is arranged over three floors with all principal rooms enjoying spectacular views over the River Fowey. A set of granite steps lead to a first floor terrace with the entrance hall combining as a lovely sunroom which then opens into the beautiful reception area, where you are immediately greeted with teasing glimpses of the river.
The first floor comprises the living room with an open fire and dining area, both southerly facing with front line panoramic views of the River Fowey and of classic proportions. The dining area opens out on to a balcony with ample space for al fresco dining or for relaxing on sun loungers. There is also a galley kitchen, utility, cloak room and an en suite bedroom.
A graceful stairway leads up to the second floor where there is a double bedroom and a master bedroom suite including a dressing room/study with doors to a private balcony. With minor modifications this could be a delightful further bedroom if required.
The ground floor could easily be converted to a separate self contained apartment and is currently set out as a guest bedroom and a work room. Both enjoy wonderful river views and lead out on to a private terrace with steps to the water. There is also a shower room on this floor. Another excellent feature and very rare for any Cornish seaside town is the incredible parking area with ample space for at least four cars as well as room for extensive boating equipment.
