5 bedroom terraced house for sale

Dowanhill Street, Queens Gate, Dowanhill, Glasgow

Offers Over £845,000

Property Description

Full description

A beautifully balanced and elegant 4 storey Grade 'B' Listed traditional red sandstone terraced townhouse which is formed over the lower ground floor, the ground floor, the first floor and the 2nd floor which was originally the Billiard Room.

The house is in a highly desirable and particularly convenient West End location and has a hugely versatile internal layout of 9 main apartments, excluding the kitchen and bathrooms and including the 2 lower ground floor rooms which have great potential to be a separate flat linked to the rest of the house.

The interior has an excellent blend of stunning original features including woodwork, elegant stairway and cupola.

Externally there is a small private garden to the front and to the rear is a private courtyard/garden area, accessed via wrought iron gates and also perfect for off-street parking. From the house there are views to the Clyde from the front and the university from the back.

History:

120 Dowanhill Street was built between 1899 and 1901 as part of a speculative building project on land bought by John Lindsay of the Dowanhill Estate Company Ltd.

The architect was David Barclay who, along with his brother, was a partner in H.D. Barclay Architects. The firm built schools in Glasgow including Glasgow Academy and admired work of Alexander "Greek" Thomson. Other local projects for Barclay included Beaumont Gate, Dowanside Road and Kensington Gate.

The original plans use the name Alton Street but this was soon changed to Queen's Gate and then changed again to Dowanhill Street in the 1940's but Queen's Gate is still what it is referred to by longstanding Westenders.
